Can anybody suggest an easy to use program which would enable me to do this? Eg, putting background music on to dvd recordings, adding titles and end credits etc?

I use Pinnacle Studio 11 - it's a bit of a system hog (like all video editing software), but gives very professional results and is easy to use.

Windows XP comes with a free movie editing program called Windows Movie Maker. It should be ideal for your purposes - simple and free!
Of course you will have to copy the film clips you have recorded from the DVD in your camera onto your computer, edit together the film, and then re-burn the completed film onto a new DVD (or just watch it on your computer), but it is a fairly simple procedure, and Movie Maker has a help section to aid you in this process. Good luck.
@ freya18th - Yes, generally you will be able to drop movie clips filmed on any digital camera into any type of film editing software with no problems at all.Don't pay off your student loan quicker than you have to.0 -

MovieMaker is usually ( ? ) loaded along with XP.
Try searching for moviemk.exe on your hard drive
Mines on the root drive:- "C:\Program Files\Movie Maker\moviemk.exe"
