Carphone Warehouse Receipt

My 13 year old son went into Carphone Warehouse to buy some £12.99 earphones. When he went to pay the lady asked him if he wanted a receipt, he said yes and she stated that he could only have a receipt if he gave her his name and address. He said he wouldn't give her his name and address so he didn't get a receipt. I went into the store and asked for a receipt and wanted to know why he wasn't given one. I was informed that you have to give your name and address to 'create a lead' this is a guarantee for the product and they keep this on record for ten years! Suffice to say I did get a receipt without giving these details. Does anyone know my rights as regards receipts, do you need to give these details when you make a purchase, can they with hold the receipt, should they be asking a 13 year old for his info etc. Any advice/clarification would be appreciated.

Q7. Do I have to produce a receipt to claim my rights?

No. In fact the trader doesn't have to give you a receipt in the first place so it would be unfair to say that you had to produce one. However, it might not be unreasonable for the shop to want some proof of purchase, so look to see if you have a cheque stub, bank statement, credit card slip etc., and this should be sufficient.

As for the details, its simply there so that if the paper receipt is lost a proof of purchase can be found - I imagine your son gives the information when he signs up to websites that require it, there's also not a lot a large company can do with a 13 year olds name and address, however if you are concerned about safety, tell him to give them your details or just tell the retailer you don't want to give any details, most places can just put "N" in each field.

It seems they don't need to give a receipt.

Personally I would not shop there again and I would write to their head office to let them know what I thought of their policy.
