My start button and some of the taskbar functins in windows 10 have been play up recently.
Login took 30 seconds, search box did not work, start menu popped up with 5 seconds delay etc.
Thougt it was a windows10 bug. I went onto control panel and uninstalled all apps that were installed since the day this problem began.
Noticed avast had updated itself yesterday, uninstalled it and now my computer is working fine again.
Just curious if anyone else has experienced this, any alternative av programmes available?

I've avast and windows 10.
No issues.0 -
never mind, maybe it's just my configuratin with the graphic drivers, programs with the combination of windows 10 and avast that was playing up.
I've uninstalled it and installed avg free. Avast was starting to bloat a bit and annoy me with all these popup messages ttrying to sell more stuff.0 -

Had to do that on OH's Win10 lappy - remove Avast, that is.
Worked fine once I had removed Avast; I used Bitdefender.
TBH I'm considering getting rid of Avast myself - it really slows down my system at times & seems a resource hog.
Esp. on startup on my system.0 -

did you get the same bug as I did with slow login, slow start menu and nonresponsive search box?
I'm using AVG free now, doing a full system scan and it's found 67 threats, after all those years of using avast. Go figure.0 -
What were the 67 threats? cookies? Or other non threats?
Used to be funny how uninstalling one AV and then reinstall another it manages to find issues.

Not exactly .............. on the laptop with Avast the Start menu (and the Notification tab on the right) stopped working altogether. The Start Menu only worked on a right-click, meaning Apps and some settings could not be accessed.
To be fair to Avast, these Start Menu problems seem to be well-documented in Win10 and randomly hit quite a lot of users for reasons as yet unknown.
On my desktop for example Avast works okay but MS Office 2013 caused very similar problems, requiring removal and re-installation before Win10 worked properly again. Since then, all is fine .......... until another update causes the same, maybe?0 -
Just google it, the Start button problem is very well known, and one of several potential solutions seems to be to either uninstall and reinstall Avast or use another AV (people who got that far seem to suggest using Windows Defender).0

wow, avast was really killing the performance of my comps. I changed out avast from my laptop. A very old 2009 model asus ul30a. It was an ultra portable (read: low power) device back then to begin with. But now with windows 10, SSD and switching from avast to avira has really given it a kick in the backside.
When I was using a mechanical hard drive on windows 10, the boot up was really bad. Windows 10 boot and login is <10 seconds.
Apple are the unsung hero here. Windows neglected startup times for eoons until Apple figured out how to essentially save state of the OS so when you press a button it just loads the state in the memory. Without Apple, MS would not have bothered overhauling Windows and it would have been the same painstaking slow evolution.0
