Decent camera for under £150?

I bought a Nikon Coolpix back in 2008 (8 megapixel) and while it's served it's purpose, the night-time and low light shots are always dire.

I'm now wanting something newer/better but am at a loss as there's now so many to choose from I just don't know where to begin.

I really am on a budget, so £150 is the most I can afford.
I'm looking for a minimum of 16 megapixels.
I also want something that does decent night-time shots.
I'm not very tech minded so something simple to use is a must.

Also... it may seem odd but I really want one that takes duracell batteries if humanly possible as I've been out with friends on several occasions and their rechargeable camera batteries have died on them, so they've missed out on photo opportunities.

I know it's a big ask, but does anyone out there have any ideas what I could take a look at?
It's nice to be important.....but it's more important to be nice :)

According to one review the Ixus 275 HS delivers "cleaner images in low light than the competition". It seems to be available for about £100. Obviously you should check the other reviews.

If you worry about running out of juice, assuming it is rechargeable from USB, carry something like this.

I would suggest carrying a spare camera battery if you are worried about the number of shots you can take. Just make sure it is charged before you go out.

Assuming you're talking about rechargeable AA batteries?. I've got two older lumix cameras of similar spec. One uses AA batteries and one has its own camera specific battery. The camera with its own battery lasts much longer than the camera using rechargeable AAs. If needed, buying a second camera battery could be more cost effective than continually buying non rechargeable batteries.

For rechargeable AA camera batteries I recommend using Sanyo/Panasonic eneloop.

These batteries hold their charge for a long time. I have used Sanyo eneloop batteries for several years and have found them to be reliable.

The Sanyo company has been bought by Panasonic so the batteries are now labled as Panasonic eneloop thus go for the Panasonic type for the up to date version.

I have been into photography for over thirty years, and I have never had a battery die on me, and my Sony A700 is still on it's original battery seven years on.
My flash gun runs on AA's and they are continually needing recharging.
If I had £150, then I would be going for a compact secondhand DSLR or bridge camera with a decent lens.
  • I have a Fuji Finepix, which uses a rechargeable battery. It lasts a long time, but, just to be sure, I bought a couple of spares from Amazon.

IIRC, they cost about £15 for the pair.
