Independent review of energy company's bills

There's so many examples of energy companies getting their sums wrong that I wonder if there is an independent site where you can enter your meter reading and the tariff and see what the bill should be - then compare with the one presented by the company. is there such a site?

  • I have never come across an energy company getting their sums wrong. Lots and lots of other things, yes, but they can all correctly multiply usage by kwh and days by standing charge.

You can work out your own bill by multiplying your consumption (as read on the meter) by the cost per kwh and adding on the standing charge. It's not hard but it allows you to make sure that you are only paying for what you use and that your payments are coving your consumption.

If you don't tell the company how much you are using then all they can do is guess what your consumption might be.

It's up to you to check the bill against the meter reading and get them to change it if their guess is wrong. Even better is to send them a monthly meter reading and the bills should then be correct.

Most gripes about energy bills are because the consumer hasn't bothered to check the bills when they come in and so they've been estimated. Several bills worth of estimates (especially quarterly ones) can end up with very large over or underpayments - that's what causes the problem trying to sort it out.

Fifteen minutes a month to check your meter, send in the readings, checking your energy statements and bank statements to make sure that DD's have been taken and recorded can save months of grief in the future.

I've been running spreadsheets of usage/costs since 2005 -I've always agreed the Utility Co. bills within a couple of p (rounding errors) -so in support of earlier posts WHEN they issue a bill based on ACTUAL READINGS, they are invariably correct.

Try Meters. 99p on the App store. Enter your tariff/s - standing charge, unit price, discounts and VAT - and bingo. It will calculate the amount owed since the last bill and do a lot more.

  • i personally have had energy companies getting their sums badly wrong.
npower charged me confusing their cubic feet and meters making their bills 10x higher!

instead of looking to a website/app which will later become sponsored why not create your own spreadsheet or use a calculator, its not that hard to work out what your bill should be.
