I've been given a fuji finepix s3000, and that's all, no cables/software/memory card and as such, I'm unsure if I should invest in all the things needed to make it a workable camera. What do you think? do you have one and what are the pics like?

most digicams use the same usb cable so any cable for another camera should work.
If you have windows XP then you'll probably find that simply connecting the camera to the pc will allow xp to recognise it and you can download your images.
Worst case scenario, is to go to the Fuji website and download the latest drivers if necessary.
memory cards cost buttons these days and i'd be surprised if you couldn't get a 2gb card for under £12.
With that camera having 3mp you'll probably find that a 512mb card will be plenty - you'll get several hundred images on that card.
my brother has had a fuji camera a few years ago and even though it was cheaper and lower res than a canon one i bought, it took better shots at night.
If you've got the camera for nothing then i reckon you could have a 512mb card and the cables and software for no more than a few pounds.
well done!
EDIT
check this cable and check these cards
i used amazon as a guide - i'm sure you could probably get these items cheaper elsewhere but amazon have great service.
You'd have change from £15 if you bought the 1gb card and cable but the 1gb is probably way more than you'd need.

Learn more about the camera here. You could either use a card reader for the xD card or probably a standard USB cable. No software is normally required with XP and it takes standard AA rechargeables, usually available at the like of Lidl/Aldi for £1.99 for four. Seems strange to get the camera without any other bits, are you sure that it actually works? Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:0

My daughter had to clear out a storeroom of items left behind because other residents of her block had moved on and left them under a notice stating "Please leave unwanted items here". Without giving too much away, ie location, that's basically it. Things that had been bought as souverners or on shopping channels had been left for disposal. Furniture, clothes etc. All destined for the skip if no-one wanted anything.
I'm sure I may have a suitable card somewhere, and will use a card reader to grab the pics. Then I will decide if it's any use to me. I rather like the idea of using macro. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
Try it with a set of AA Alkaline batteries before spending any money on it. Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:0

I was wondering if the SD card in my current camera would be of use. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0

You'll need an xD card (physically different so SD won't fit). As expresso said, try it without a card first to check that it comes on - should display a message like "No Card!".0

Oh yes, that comes on, fresh batteries worked wonders, I have a card reader, I note how cheap XD cards are, so I think I will now proceed and get back to you. An up-date. I've ordered a 128mb card from 7day shop for £3.99.
Then my daughter phoned to tell me there was a 128mb card in her room which she didn't need !. Anyway I've used it and taken a few sample pics to get the feel of it. (Nothing suitable for showing yet). As for the zoom and macro, I imagined that I'd zoom in a close as possible, but that isn't so, as you get out of focus. It's a case of closing in untill you are satisfied, take the pic, and zoom in on that. If there was an insect for example, is it possible to capture and freeze what you've zoomed in on, prior to transferring to computer?.
I'm only testing on ordinary batteries and it appears to be eating them up.This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
When on the Macro setting, the focus range for is [FONT=arial, helvetica][FONT=Verdana, Arial, Helvetica]Macro: 0.3 ft - 2.6 ft. i.e. about 4 inches closest. Read the review.
Download the manual here.
