Argos Card

Hi, just a quick question about an Argos Card.

Today went into the shop and got an Argos Card got accepted within 10 minutes on the card, given all the paperwork etc

Was ordering a Playstation 4, with games. For some reason got given the games which were billed to the argos card without even having them, but was not allowed the Playstation console due to not having the Argos Card.

Why would they bill the games worth £100 to the card, and let me take them away but not let me bill the console until I have the card???

I'm confused why they would give me the games and bill them to the argos card without me having the card, but not let me have the console until I received the Argos Card in 7-10 working days??? It does not make sense at all

Any adivce

  • Sorry if this post is not exactly clear. My point I'm making is this.

I went into Argos and got an "Argos Card" I was accepted for credit within 15 minutes.

I asked to order a PlayStation 4, with a couple games. The female behind the desk was happy to give the items except this, I have to wait 7-10 days for the card to get the actual console but the games were billed instantly to the Argos Card.

Why was I not allowed to get my console and it not billed to the card like my games were???

I always thought if you buy in store and then choose to open a store card account to pay for them you can walk right away with the products, maybe your credit limit you got given wasn't enough to cover the console so that wasn't put on the card.

In your situation I would have asked the shop staff; in fact it almost defies belief that you didn't.

So what is going to happen in 7-10 days? Are you supposed to return to the store and purchase the console using the card or what?

I would suggest Argos are the best people to advise you on why this happened. Did the staff member that was serving you not give you an explanation?

Pessimists see a glass half empty :(
Engineers just see a glass twice the size it needed to be :D

This is something you need to clarify with the shop themselves. It could be credit limit or some limit put on how much you can get until further checks are made. We can only guess. Argos can tell you.

However you have potentially ended up worse off. Assuming you wanted this for Christmas then you wont get it. Prices may well drop in the sales, which could save you some money. However games prices could drop as well. So you have paid pre-Christmas pricing for games you cannot use until later, when you could have bought them cheaper anyway.

I don't think I would have bought games if I was refused the console.

Yes I'll go for credit limit too. My experience of Argos Card is that if you buy in-store and choose a new Argos card you get a provisional limit which is very low. So it's not so much a case of waiting for the card but waiting for the limit which is applied at the time the card is issued and probably received with the card.

Have a go at registering at myargoscard.co.uk and logging in if you know your card number.

The Argos card is provided by Vanquis, it could be as others have said the credit limit is too low. The system may have rejected the amount so they simply put the games through and fobbed you off so they got the card opened. Staff are targeted on sign-ups but they don't get a reward or incentive, it's a bit like their insurance, they just have to sell as much as possible as it makes the store good margins. Argos have got in trouble a few times for pushing their cards too hard, offering incentives and vouchers.

Once the card comes through it would be too late to do much about it, though I don't see why you couldn't get em to take the games back then cancel the card with Vanquis.

Don't get confused with the Argos card that is issued by home retail group which is what is offered instore, the Argos credit card is indeed issued by Vanquis but is offered online and by leaflets instore. Two seperatecards with massive differences in operation and promotions.
