wear something white at night

Who remembers the old public information TV ad, wear something white at night, I wish they would repeat it, in the last week I have had a number of people all dressed in dark clothing running across the road in front of me, tonight it was raining and they had their hoods up as well, just saw the flash of their legs lit by the headlights of cars coming the other way.
I recall it ended with something like ' even carry a newspaper' to show something white.
The other thing would be to make all outer garments in dark colours have some light reflecting tape on them.

Some may argue what you experienced is natural selection at work
  • I do.

Get yourself seen on your bike at night

Dark means danger, so get yourself seen
    At night, make it white,
In the dark make it light,
    But get yourself seen.

Take a brush to your bike,
Use some tape if you like,
    But get yourself seen.

    Make it big,
    Make it bold,
    Make it bright!

To be sure that you're seen
Keep your lights bright and clean,
    But get yourself seen.

Whether working for a living or just riding for your pleasure
Let the world see your life is something that you treasure
    And get yourself seen,

    Make it big,
    Make it bold,
    Make it bright,
    And get yourself seen!
  • Nah, gotta look cool innit.

Couldn't agree more though, helps a lot they have headphones perma plugged in just to assist Darwin's laws on their way.

Those public info films had too much common sense for the modernists, taking a bit of responsibility for your own safety is long past.

I usually wear black or grey and won't be changing that to be seen, i'll just look across roads when crossing.

Although depends how you define running in front of you - as some motorists have a tendency of being a bit dramatic when taking a 'tight' spot between cars.
  • Wearing white at night with white hat?
You will be called KKK :D very dangerous lately...

There are swarms of joggers near me and to be fair, they are all lit up like Christmas trees with flashing hats, armbands, leg bands, shoe laces, etc.
  • It's cyclists around our area, all with a death wish, dark clothes and no lights.
Started my job at the bottom and liked it

To be accurate, it was 'wear something light at night'.
Very good advice it was, too.

That PI-film was the very first thing I thought of when I saw the thread title! :D

I suppose if it was remade today it would be along the lines of "Wear your Hi-Viz, illuminated, Kevlar with emergency GPS tracker - at all times"" :(
  • even if you want to wear black which you have a right to a illuminous bangle or strip wouldnt go a miss people seem to think they can walk right out in front of you
    What goes around-comes around
