Store credit instead of refund

OK long story summarised:
Bought item using Visa credit card 3 months ago which developed a fault.
Item sent off to retailer who then sent it back to manufacturer for a repair.
Item couldnt be repaired, item no longer sold so manufacturer told retailer to issue refund.
After 14 days of checking my credit card balance the refund still not showing up on my statement.
Contact retailer who say they have given me store credit, not a refund to my credit card.
Is this allowed? I needed the item and because of the slow turnaround I had to go out and purchase a replacement whilst I was waiting for the repair. Now I have store credit I dont want to use and money still on my credit card.

Well in fairness but it does actually hinge on the cause of the damage!
You say "developed a fault" and if the retailer/manufacturer agrees that it was an inherent fault (possibly under SOGA, and possibly the case if they did a free repair for you) then you are entitled to your money back via credit card and may need to consider the chargeback (it is called something else for CC) option as a last resort (CC company jointly liable etc).
BUT if the fault developed because you did something then you may not be covered under SOGA, in which case store credit may be considered a very generous goodwill gesture.0 -
OK thanks for that. It was an inherent fault, not damage caused to it. There is a strict policy with damaged goods.0

How much was the item? If £100 or more then raise a section 75 claim on the CC company to recover the funds.0
