Just a question out of interest really, when you are buying shares in a single company what is the usual quantity (in money terms or number of shares) do you spend on each transaction? Also what is the absolute minimum you would buy?

My answer to the first bit (investment trusts aside) is that I wouldn't do it.
I am therefore unable to answer the second bit.I am one of the Dogs of the Index.0 -
I always buy in blocks of £5000, but might have to make an exception when the government sells its shares in Lloyds Bank - maybe around £1000.Saved over £20K in 20 years by brewing my own booze.

It's up to you. Dealing costs are anywhere between £5 to £15 plus 0.5% stamp duty. So you can work out how much you would be happy to pay as a proportion of your investment.
For example would you be happy to buy £20 worth of shares if it was going to cost you £15?
Also when you sell your shares the dealing costs will be the same, but no stamp duty.
