Every friend of mine who has rented or rents would prefer to buy but unfortunately because of the house prices in Hertfordshire and the cost of rent they are simply unable to buy a home. These are people who are working earning well above the national average.

I actually don't know anyone who chooses to rent. (Sure there might be some people out there, just don't know any)

The BTL Landlords on here and the sympathisers are seriously over stating their worth and importance to the general public.

Get used to it. As per the title of the thread your industry is absolutely resented and quite rightly so.

The only saving grace is that the government seems to of grasped the general feeling and look like they are doing something about through legislation and taxes. Good job! long may it continue.

I can honestly say I did resent LL's prior to becoming one, to the extent I'd actively avoid acquaintances.

Being candid, it was a jealousy thing and I really do understand why people resent LL's.

It's something about people watching capital appreciation fall into their laps I think.
A sort of unworthiness, a sense 'it's all just luck and sucking the life out of others', although now I'm on the other side I know the reality of the worry and the hassles, and yes at times, the bloody hard work required.

I still meet Poles and others, here just a few years that are managing to buy in these places.

They often fiddle their mortgage, but they know they can afford it, indeed 2 separate Poles I've met recently were buying properties supposedly for their own occupation, but in fact they will let out as rooms.

Note, when I first bought in 1991, retail interest rates were some 3 times higher than now, and so in spite of lower prices, the mortgages were a real challenge.

Edit - lots of Brits also fiddle their mortgage (a temporary supposed pay rise from their friendly boss for example and note well over 99% of owners in any year do not get repossessed)

Every graduate I have known who has secured a job in London. Would prefer to buy if they have made that decision to work and live in the city. I don't know anyone who chooses to rent as ive said.

You seriously over state your worth to the public.

You maybe a Chartered Surveyor Chuck but in terms of your profession as a landlord it is completely unregulated. You do not create any jobs. you have no compliance to adhere to.

    Things are changing thankfully.

You've (unsurprisingly) got things back to front, it is a falling economy that impacts house prices.

That`s not what the poster I replied to said though.

If it wasn't for BTL house prices would be significant lower (Especially the many blocks of flats that have been built

Why would property be cheaper if owners were buying them instead of LL's? If anything LL's drive a hard bargain and try and get places for less, it is after all an investment / business.

You say renting should only be a small part of the market, yet many people in the last 20 years argued the Brits should be happy to rent 'as they do on the continent', that we should 'get over our ownership obsessions'.

I'm not just a chartered surveyor, I'm also a university lecturer, where do you think these graduates that you refer to, get their degrees? What is your worth to the general public?

BTL Landlords are immoral and are wrongly making a living out of profiteering from a basic human right. (Having a roof over your head) They add no value and create no wealth and no employment. Also they have the cheek to call themselves "Entrepreneurs" Disgusting industry. If they didn't exist who would miss them?

Don`t worry, the PTB have caught on (more to the fact that the public have cottoned on to what LL`s are doing, the profiteering isn`t news to them because they are already steeped in that as the ruling class, but the fact that they will lose votes if BTL`ers are not culled is the problem) and are about to tax BTL out of existence for all but the most solvent landlords.

Do you honestly think that a degree has any worth nowadays?
