weird face pop up on tablet

Options
My friend has just got her first tablet and is trying to get her head around the ins and outs of using it. This is the first "computer" she has used so is finding it a bit of a learning curve.

However, she has been a bit unnerved by a face that has appeared on the screen. She said it was horrible, filled about a third of the screen, was sort of a brown colouredimpression of a face with horrible eyes and appeared to have brown stuff running down the eyes.
Underneath, there was a few sentences - something about ," I like it when she cries, it makes me feel good" she said it went on in a similar vein.

Can anyone tell us what on earth this is and how could it have been sent to her as it has freaked her out?

She hasn't even got email or anything set up yet.

Was she on the internet, on a website? It was probably just a pop up ad. They like to fill lots of the screen these days.

That sounds unpleasant for her to say the least. Been doing a bit of investigatory work.

Has anybody had access to her tablet and been able to install "Scary Face Prank Screen Scare" from the Google Playstore by any chance?

Haven't used it myself but it sounds like it may well be capable of making such things happen.

May be worth a check through her apps to see if some rogue has installed it for a laugh.

Is the tablet second-hand or reconditioned?

I know someone who has just bought a second-hand PC on Ebay, and doesn't seem concerned about the possibility of pre-installed malware - that makes me shudder.

Poltergeist for sure, she need to get it dunked in holy water ASAP
Change is inevitable, except from a vending machine.

Second-hand? Worth a full factory restore (from settings/about as I recall) before sinking more time into it.

It is a brand new tablet bought as a Birthday present from her daughter.
She is just learning how to use it (never had a computer of any sort before) so hasn't put anything on it yet apart from setting up her email.
It was the image plus the wording with it that was so weird.
