Honeymoon in Mexico for 2 weeks

Hi folks

We’ve booked flights for our honeymoon from the UK to Mexico for 2-17 February (2 weeks). We think we’d like to stay in three different areas: Isla Mujeres first (for 3 nights), then around Chichen Itza (3 nights) and finally Playa del Carmen (7 nights).

It would be great if anyone could comment on:

* Whether Isla Mujeres is worth going to for a few days? We’ve seen mixed reviews, and we’ll probably be going to Cozumel too.

* How good an idea it is to stay in the Chichen Itza park, so we can get in there early - and also what the public transport connections are like from Chichen Itza? We might want to visit Merida or Ek Balam, for example. Any recommendations for specific hotels welcome.

* Any great all-inclusive options around Playa del Carmen, for a week?

Gracias a todos! :)

  • We went to island majuras for the day and drove a golf buggy around the island. There was diving and snorkelling options too.

Id avoid all inclusive if it was me, you'll get better value and better food and choice anywhere else.

We stayed in Cancun, we enjoyed it as its lively but it depends what you want really

We stayed at one of the Riu's in Playa Del Carmen & didn't regret it as we were able to use the other Riu's in that area too.

If you do get the ferry across to Cozumel from PDC, it can be a really rough ride. The girls are so good though as they come round giving out & collecting the sick bags

It took us about 2 hours by bus from PDC to Chichen Itza, we thought it would only take about 15 mins but the bus had to go all the way around. It was very cheap though, & do wear a coat as the air con on the buses can be an absolute mare!

Soz I went off on one there, oh the memories :D

Have a look on TripAdvisor for more advice, it all sounds good to me. You'll have a fantastic time! :)
  • May I suggest basing yourself at an AI for the two weeks instead..you can do Chitzen Itza as a day trip easily as well as many others.
We stayed in Playacar which is a beautiful gated community near PDC with a beautiful beach and easy access into town if needed.
We stayed at Riu Palace Mexico and had full use of the other RIUs in Playacar.. Was absolutely beautiful!
    Have a fantastic wedding
Thanks to all who post here:beer:

Thanks, especially regarding the ferry ride to Cozumel!

Couple of thoughts from me, I used to live in this area of Mexico. First I'm not sure you need 3 days at Chitzen Itza. Its great to stay near there so you can get in early morning and spend some time before the Cancun tour buses arrive but I'd certainly try to try to include other ruins and fully agree with your plan to include Ek Balam. Getting to some of these areas on public transport can be tricky and time consuming, although certainly cheap and interesting if you have the time, but I'd recommend looking at a hire car to get around.
I'd also agree with comment above about the ferry to Cozumel from PDC, unless you really want to go I'm not sure I'd bother.
One suggestion from me would be to drive down the main coastal road and just try turning off onto side roads down to the sea where you'll come across the most amasing hidden beaches, particularly in the area around Akumal.
  • I also second the all inclusive option in Mexico. We stayed in one in the Riviera Maya and were able to visit all the areas we wanted to by way of excursion, but equally we could stay in the hotel and relax if we wanted to (which after the hectic few weeks leading up to the wedding was just what we needed). Not the type of holiday I ever thought I would do or enjoy but we ended up in the same hotel the following year as we enjoyed it so much.

How nice . We had our honeymoon in Mexico also.

We did Cancun - Chichen Itza - Merida - Mexico city.

Concerning Chichen Itza, we travelled to it from Cancun bus station on the public bus. No problems at all.

We stayed in the Hacienda Chichen resort in one of the separate bungalows. I believe these were originally built for the explorers who discovered Chichen Itza (but maybe this is urban legend).

They were absolutely beautiful & really romantic.

We booked the whole lot through trailfinders & told them in advance it was our honeymoon. Every hotel had made an effort to welcome us in some way (upgrade to sea view suite at Cancun, bottle of bubbly at Chichen Itza, flowers & fruit basket at Merida, Zocola square view at Mexico city) so definitely worth mentioning when booking.
  • We had an all too short week on the Yucat!n peninsula. The AI option was incredible- we nipped on and off a collectivo from the hotel entrance and visited Tulum and Akumal- just a few quid and a short ride.
I'm just here basically to say don't be scared of travelling like the locals!
Akumal is a pretty much guaranteed swim with sea turtles (as was our hotel). Fabulous.
My partner has spent several months sailing around the carrib- and says the carribean coast of Mexico was far more picture postcard Caribbean than the islands.
