you can also get a student accoutn and use the interest free overdraft in a similar way! i guess i've seen a lot of students not use credit cards as responsibly as you are, and after the 0% time is up they end up paying a lot of interest.

i'm not saying that they're bad, and as the OP says, paying off in full every month is a good thing to do - but credit cards aren't for everyone. i don't disagree with a thing to OP says - it's all good advice, just wanted to throw in a word of caution as for some people it can be start of a slippery slope!

Yes I agree, although i've never had one I can understand how it could work out worse in the end.

  • I completely agree!
Its not for everyone my friend hates them but he does think hes a bit of a know it all. For example; when martin posts something about a credit card saying to get one and spend about 40p on it and you get £15 on play.com or something and then just not use it again, its a great idea to get freebies! but my friend thinks its all a scam and its not possible for the company to do it etc!

  • the &more card is brilliant. i use a cc online as its safer and just pay it off straight away- it helps to have an account which you only use for paying it off, so you know that money's 'spent' already. i got £5 of vouchers by putting my holiday on it (including teh other 3 peoples shares which they gave me in cash hehe!) and £15 worth just for signing up and agreeing to get info sent to me about car and hoem insurance- not sign up, just info :) You also get regular mailings with internet and instore coupons for extra points when you buy certain things (e.g. i had 500 when you buy clothes- i bought a £4.99 pack of nicks and 200 when you buy food- i bought a 99p microwave meal) brill!

i also reccomend opening up store cards for the initial 10%/ 20% off, plus benefits like: HOF card gives you 500 points for signign up, then 3 points per £, which can be traded for £10 voucher when you've got 1000, plus regular 10% off days and goodie bags at teh parties at summer and christmas or Debenhams which gives regular 10% off days, 10% off in their cafes and a brill goodie bag when you sigh up. My tip with these is to immediately pay off your purchases at the next counter along!

CC's and SC's are fab for offers and points etc. but dont get into debt on them, only spend what you can afford to immediately pay off!

  • Re applying for more than one card at a time, it's not a good idea as when companies go through your credit report if they see more than one application in (usually) a 3-4 month period, they may decline you as they think you're desperate and in financial trouble, and therefore a 'risk'.
