Part time job gone.

Options
Hi, I work full time in a factory but have been doing a part time cleaning job at the same factory and paid separately for it. I've never had any complaints about my work but due to the factory expanding I've been told that my cleaning job will be made full time and be given to a new person. I've been doing the cleaning job for over 3 years and will lose about £1000 per year.

Is it worth me making a fuss about this?

Thanks.

You can't force them to continue employing you. However, Technically they are making you redundant so should provide redundancy pay which would amount to 3 weeks wages but at £1000 a year that's Circa £25 a week pre tax so I total........ £75?

If they are also your employers for your main source of income then do you really want to rock the boat? Not that, with 3 years employment they can dismiss you without good cause, they can't. But still. Your choice but is it really worth the hassle?

No, its not redundancy. Redundancy is when a job no longer exists. This is totally the opposite of redundancy.

Not sure of the legalities of that one though.

Not redundancy. I see little point in making a fuss, fuss always sounds aggressive. Can you not simply have a discussion about how this impacts on you, and suggest ways to reduce the impact. They are unlikely to be able to continue the current arrangement if they need full time cover. You could ask if they can get another Pt person to do the extrahours. Point out the advantage to them in that there is some cleaning cross cover for holidays etc. Offer to collaborate to make a workeable shift pattern for two part-timers.

Ask if you could make up your lost earnings through overtime in your current job or working in another dept.Ask about how much "notice" you are being given of this change, it will be informed by what your contract says, but you may get longer if they need you to carry on doing the work whilst they recruit.
  • It's not worth the hassle of complaining so I'll try to do a bit of overtime instead. Although cleaning is not a glam job it does make a change from the usual grind

As I say, anything that pays the bills is worthwhile.

As mentioned above, for the sake of £20 a week, is it really worth the hassle of chasing them on it?

The part-time cleaning position no longer exists. It's been replaced by a full-time cleaning position, which presumably the OP can't do without giving up their other full-time position.

I would have thought however that as they are continuing to employ the OP in a full-time role, he can't be seen as redundant. His original employment is, in fact, alternative employment. Sort of thing.

The part time position should still exist, and they should advertise for an additional part time person
Mortgage, we're getting there with the end in sight £6587 07/23, otherwise free of the debt thanks to MSE help!
