freezer had blockage can l claim for ruined food

l brought my hotpoint freezer 16 months ago from john lewis. 2 weeks ago it stopped working all the food was ruined and thrown out. Hotpoint came out 11 days after l rang repaired it saying it was a blockage. ive emailed john lewis to try and claim some money for the lost food. Does anyone know if l have any rights or any chance of receiving anything from john lewis.
l could claim on my house insurance but if hotpoint had repaired it quicker then some of the food may have been saved
Thank you in advance for any advice:)

What? Was none of the food eatable during that eleven days?

Compile a list of your losses, with suitable confirming evidence - e.g. receipts, and pass them to John Lewis.
Remember also that you need to have mitigated your losses. Could a neighbour, friend, family, etc. have helped with freezer space?

Were John Lewis involved in this episode in any way, or did you arrange directly with Hotpoint for them to attend?

How are John Lewis to blame for a blockage in a 16 month old freezer?

Most household insurance policies cover loss of freezer contents, claim on your insurance that is what you have it for.
  • We had some food from freezer for few days and gave away a couple of joints to a neighbour but we had brought all the food for christmas.
no family close and the neighbours l tried had no space.
l didnt keep receipts for food as didnt know the freezer was going to stop working, but did take photos as advised
l contacted Hotpoint at first about repair, then john lewis who confirmed through hotpoint

How much are you asking for the food?
  • l havent asked for a specific amount but a gesture of some sort would be good
The freezer is still under john lewis guarantee
  • You need to ask for an amount to have any kind of success.

How do they know whether you just had a packet of bacon or a freezer full of goose and salmon?

Chance are you are very unlikely to receive anything. If you want to try and receive a goodwill gesture you need to tell them what you want.

You claimed under the warranty, so you are bound by its terms. If it includes consequential loss then you can make a claim. Had you made a claim under the SOGA against John Lewis then you would have had a stronger case to make an additional claim for the loss, but would have been asked to prove that the failure of the freezer was as a result of an inherent fault. John Lewis are generally very good when it comes to customer service so they may decide to make you a goodwill offer of compensation - you have nothing to lose by asking.
  • Thank you powerful_Rogue and LilElvis l will email with an estimate ,its more upsetting that it was a full freezer with christmas food and not able to replace it all

    What caused the blockage?

If it was due to an inherent fault then you may be able to reclaim if you have suffered a loss due to their breach of contract. However if it was down to not being cleaned correctly, then its user error I'm afraid.
You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means - Inigo Montoya, The Princess Bride
  • Im not sure what caused it but l am very careful with items,my last freezer lasted 30 years lol
