Amazon trying to shirk consumer rights?

If you go to 'contact us' and choose the topic of 'how to return an item', along with the option of contacting them or processing a return, Amazon provide this information:
Did You Know?

Amazon.co.uk, and many Sellers on Amazon.co.uk, offer returns for most items within 30 days of receipt of delivery.
To return an item please go to our Online Returns Centre.

After 30 days you won't be able to return items via the Online Returns Centre. You may wish to visit the manufacturer's website or contact them directly for support on the issue with the product.

To me this only seems to serve the purpose of dissuading customers from contacting Amazon if something goes wrong after 30 days from purchase and by omitting to say that you can still contact them to organise a return and refund if appropriate they are misleading customers.

Does anyone know if this new or has this always been shown?

Don't think this relates to damaged / faulty goods but more likely to be about if you don't want it.

I sent back a DVD player I had ordered, didn't even open the cardboard box, and the return service was very good. Got an email return label, printed it off, stuck it on, took the parcel to the PO, bloke scanned it and the next day I got confirmation of my refund.
  • Rather than shirking consumer rights are they not giving you more time to change your mind than they need to. Do we not have 14 days to change our mind?

Many years ago I had a faulty item and I recall that it was not that obvious how to contact them, whereas returning an item within their returns window has always been easy. However I emailed them and they did respond quickly and were reasonably helpful.

That said I avoid using them for expensive or bulky items that may develop faults, partly because I am not sure how good they would be at resolving complaints concerning faulty goods.

Amazon are brilliant for dealing with faulty goods outside the usual returns window. Just speak to them on livechat and they'll arrange a courier to collect the item and you'll be promptly refunded. I now choose them over John Lewis, who have become fear less helpful than they used to be.

Also bear in mind that amazon is not a UK company. When you buy from them, the contract is governed in accordance with the laws of the duchy of Luxembourg.

They will be subject to similar laws (since our own consumer rights come from EU directives and they are subject to the same directives) but the directive may have been implemented differently in luxembourg.

For example, when purchasing from the UK, you can take legal action for up to 6 years from purchase in england and up to 5 years from discovery in scotland. Where i believe luxembourg transposed the directive literally and you only have the minimum 2 years (minimum set by the directive) to make claims for faulty/misdescribed goods.
You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means - Inigo Montoya, The Princess Bride
