I have just bought my first property and would like to know what would be the best way to find the cheapest gas and electricity suppliers.

    You first need to register with your existing provider and if a new property get numbers from the builder/estate agent.
    Then go to a comparison site like Energyhelpline and quote an annual consumption. The average p.a. consumption is mentioned in the stickies ab ove, which are worth reading.
