Gaming PC - "Steam" Question?

I have ordered a gaming PC for my grandson's Christmas present. The PC is installed with two hard drives a 240Gb SSD which runs the operating system and an ordinary drive 1TB for storage.

My next problem which I know nothing about is that he wants "Steam" installed, which I believe is a paid download site for games, so how do you get the downloaded games to install and run on the 1TB hard drive instead of the SSDrive?

It's probably a stupid question, but I dont have a clue with gaming PC's..

By choosing the 1TB drive as the install path.

change the installer from C:/Steam/game to D:/Steam/game where D is the drive letter of your 1TB drive.

It's not a stupid question at all, it's a very sensible question to ask.

A while back Steam added the feature to choose where a game is installed regardless of where Steam is installed, when you choose to install a game you get a drop down list of the different drives and can individually install games on different drives so not a problem to install games on the big drive.

Steam is a gaming platform and social network for gamers, it's mostly like an online shop for games, you pay for a game, you download the game, you play the game.

it should also be known that not all games are paid for, in fact it has a decent amount of games which are free, they also have regular sales which can give very good discounts on games.

something to also keep an eye on is the humble bundle's (main humble bundle and the weekly humble bundle) which are a 'pay what you want' charity sale, in which you can get a good amount of games for very little money, and in which most instances provide steam keys, which allows you to add the games to your library and download and manage them through steam

on a £100 shop you might on average get 70 items save
    10p per product = £7 a week ~ £28 a month
    20p per product = £14 a week ~ £56 a month
30p per product = £21 a week ~ £84 a month (or in other words one weeks shoping at the new price)

The best way is to simply install steam onto the larger drive, then let it download all the games into its own directly.

if you want to install it onto the SSD, then you can set the download directory to the HDD, so steam itself will be on the SSD, but the games it downloads will be placed on the HDD.

you can create multiple game directories, so in theory you could have some games on the SSD while others on the HDD

Not all "Gaming PC's" are equal. Just because someone's lumped a few part together and called it a "gaming PC does not make it one.

Regarding "Steam" it's only an installer. Simply install and go and be careful of your kid maxing your card out on it.
  • Hi

I just came to ask a similar question so will ask here incase it helps the OP.

I have also purchased a new gaming pc for son. I have downloaded a game via Rockstar games social club but realised it downloaded in the ssd so the game does not have enough room to fully download.

Can I just drag the files across to the HDD or do I have to start again. I purchased the game on cdkeys in their sale and worried I might lose it if I have to download again. Does that happen? :) Also do I keep Rockstar social club on ssd or put everything on HDD.

I have only used steam before and now I am coming across Rockstar , Uplay etc so getting confused. Also unsure what to keep on ssd as it us not huge capacity.

    Thanks for any help.

It depends how the platform you are using works. I've not used Rockstar social club, so i dont know exactly how it works.

but with steam, you can copy the already downloaded files, then just goto verify install, and it'll download the missing parts. The same is true for origin. so it might work the same for rockstar too. Thats assuming that it'll allow you to choose where to download games to of course.

I tend to stick to mostly steam and origin
  • Thanks Cycrow.

I will give it a try tomorrow. Hopefully if I mess things up it will allow me to download again. It's my own fault as I wasn't feeling great so did not pay attention to where it was downloading.

I will report back tomorrow for information.

    Xx
