How does Chromecast Work?

If I want to watch a DVD on my TV, which is rarely, I just run a lead from my computer to the TV.

My DVD player is broken and I usually watch DVDs on my computer, but when a few of us want to watch, the room where my computer is is not big enough, plus the sound is better on my TV

Someone suggested getting a Chromecast but my computer does not have wifi although I have a Virgin Superhub with wifi and I have another computer connected by wifi but it does not have a DVD player.

The question is, can I use a Chromecast device to watch DVDs on my TV using the wifi on the superhub or will I need to have wifi on my computer?

As I recall, all the dongles use slightly different technologies, and Chromecast works by your phone or tablet initiating a direct steam from the server to the Chromecast, then acting as a remote control.

As such, I don't think it's the solution you're looking for, and that you'd be happier with a new £20 DVD player
  • A new DVD player is a much better idea; the chromecast 'can' do what you want (e.g. using VLC player) but unless you've got a fast computer and very fast internal network, it will be laggy and poor quality

The chromecast is mainly for pulling data down from the internet to your TV - to get it from your PC, it needs to stream it, and that's not very quick or good yet

Can you just connect your laptop to the TV using a wire? That'd be the best/cheapest option

The Chromecast was suggested as a Christmas present, I'd rather get a bottle of Whisky.

I think you'll find that will produce a rather fuzzy picture.

Your PC will need to be on the same wifi network. Get a new DVD player. You can get one for less than the price of a Chromecast. For less than the price of a bottle of whiskey for that matter.
