What is royal mail proof of delivery

I've got to send an item back and the seller has sent me a free returns address but he said I've got to get royal mail proof of delivery before I can have a refund.

You take it to the counter in the post office and they will give you proof of postage unless the free return label is for tracked postage, in this case, you will get a tracking number from the same post office counter.
    ally.
  • A free returns label doesn't even get you proof of postage.

Sending back items Royal Mail Signed For is acceptable. Royal Mail special delivery is tracked and covers more expensive items.

You can also send it tracked via a courier.

You do not have to send through Royal Mail to get a refund from ebay. Open a returns case and ask for a pre-paid label so it can be sent tracked. If the seller refuses contact ebay.

If the seller refuses to refund then you can add the tracking number to the ebay case which will show proof of delivery and ebay will refund you.

Do not use the free label, you will not have proof of postage or proof of delivery and by the sounds of it they'll refuse to refund you. You could pay to have it sent tracked, but you shouldn't have to. Edit: Unless, as above, it is a free label for a tracked method.
  • I've open a returns and the seller gave me an address to send the item back to but when I asked for a pre paid label he said I should use the freepost but I should get proof of postage.

If the seller has sent a prepaid returns label, the Post Office will issue a tracking receipt. I am guessing this is what the seller is talking about. We use them and when the buyer goes to the PO, we ask them to email us the returns tracking.

Does the label look like this:screen_shot_2015-12-16_at_14_48_28.jpg

Our customers get a tracking (free) from the PO which always starts XB OR KF.
  • The seller has sent me a returns address and not a label to print off.

    Something like this.

    FREEPOST
    BTLL/UPUK/LIKE
    Company Name
    Address
    Postcode

I guess BTLL/UPUK/LIKE is some sort of reference number for returns.

I'd be careful. If it is not tracked then if it was to be lost in the post you'd not get any refund unless you can prove delivery. It is how much you trust the company.

This. Considering your first post I wouldn't trust them and would make sure it is sent back tracked.

A free post label and returns label (as per my illustration above) aren't the same. However, you can go to the Post Office with the parcel labelled up and ask them if it qualifies for free tracking. The returns labels I issue do, so that's all I tell my customers who are a bit dubious. You won't know with the free post label until you take it there and ask or someone like custardy knows the current situation with them. There is no point paying for tracking if it is included.
  • It really depends how much it's worth, usually I'd just get proof of postage. Unless it was worth a lot. This includes the weight of the item so is reasonable proof that you did post it.

If you have written communication from the seller saying that the only requirement for a refund is proof of postage why pay anything else?

If I remember correctly you can upgrade freepost or prepaid postage to a tracked service. You only pay the difference. So actually it may work out cheaper and more convenient for you than another courier.
