Hi all
I would be really grateful if someone can give me insight about travel insurance. I am currently in usa and is planning to stay for few 4 months and i am looking to purchase (whilst already here) a travel insurance that can cover me during this period as my current insurance only cover a maximum 41 days in every trip.
i thought that it will be alright as i will be visiting different states and have no idea that even though i will be going to different states it is still classified as single trip. so come 41 days i will not be covered.
also my current insurance - direct travel insurance can not upgrade me as i think theres something going with the company.
please point me to the right insurance product.
thank you in advance.

It's difficult to buy travel insurance when you are not in the UK as most policies require the trip to start here. The usual suggestion is to look at backpacker insurance providers as a few of them (WorldNomads is the one usually mentioned) will start a policy from outside the UK, but expect it to be more expensive than a standard offering.0

There's not many Travel Insurance companies that sell insurance once you've left the UK as there are concerns regarding fraud. You can try World Nomads and Globe Link.
For a trip of greater than 30 days, I'd recommend looking at a Backpacker policy (prior to leaving!)0 -
thank you agrinall and WD1234.
unfortunately i am already out of the country.
i did have an annual multi trip travel insurance but it is only recently that learned that it only covers me for maximum of 40 days each trip - each time i leave the country and back.
since i travel from uk to LA and stayed there for 4 weeks - i thought that it will be considered as 1 trip then from LA to new york for 3 weeks - another trip little id i know that is not case.
i have tried searching for an insurance here but i don't know how legit US websites are. and https://www.insubuy.com always comes up in my search engine which offer a competitive rate in us dollars too. i wonder if anyone from here is familiar with https://www.insubuy.com?i wish i have live my life a little bit off the book, took a chance and gamble :whistle:0 -

I don't know anyone who would view that as two trips.
Does the US policy cover UK citizen holidaying in the US, who are already there?0 -

i did view it as two trips.
would that mean that even if i buy annual multi trip travel insurance which i normally do and at some point decided to travel for longer period would that mean i have to buy a different travel insurance for the long trip?
they actually do cover it. well according tp their website thats why i am here asking for advised/suggestions but its based on americas health system where you have to pay/co-pay etc. sounds very complicated to me. if i can, i would rather have the uk system.
and can't get my head round iti wish i have live my life a little bit off the book, took a chance and gamble :whistle:0 -
If you have an annual policy and then book a trip that is longer than the maximum trip allowed, then that long trip will not be covered at all by the annual policy.
So check before you buy a long trip, as the purchase will not be covered at all, meaning that any early cancellation whilst you are uninsured will have to be paid for yourself.
But as far as your current trip is concerned, now you are going over the maximum length, then you need to get cover now, as you are not insured for any part of this trip at all (unless you do return home within the maximum trip period)0 -
Do you have a specific visa. I'm sure the length of time you can stay in the US is 90 days.0

try Google with "travel insurance extended trip when already outside uk"
brings up WorldNomads, truetraveller, worldwideinsure...(I have not used any of them personally)
It will be more costly than standard annual policy but, since you are already abroad your options will be limited and I would not risk being in US without cover
In standard policies a trip duration is the length of time between leaving the UK and returning to the UK. For LA and New York to be treated as separate trips you would needed to have returned to the UK in between0 -

although my pre existing conditions are minors to my opinion (migraines, high cholesterol but not on medications for it)it is really hard to look for cover. i tried searching for true travellers insurance and they use a separate company something called 'Mediquote' to deal with their pre existing health conditions separately. and the way i understand i will have to pay them separately for the premiums too. and when i tried to searched for it the only 'mediquote' that came up is a company/insurance brokers from canada.
whilst searching i came across a company from here in america that can give me cover but as i said their system is far more complicated for me with co-pay etc.
at one point i was tempted to buy an insurance without declaring pre existing health conditions. after all, how can someone tell that what you are going to A&E for will turn up as arising from your pre existing health conditions?i wish i have live my life a little bit off the book, took a chance and gamble :whistle:0 -
