Complaint advice

Hi There any help would be great, so I've been paying my gas and electric bill for the last 2years since moving into my property always been up to date except one payment which was paid after receiving a letter. The energy company have now decided to send me an email saying I owe £600 this is due to them billing me incorrectly. I've asked for explanation and they don't know why just keep repeating that the bills were incorrect and didn't I realise I was under paying, as this was my first time living alone I thought everything I was paying was correctly and they've only ever emailed me the amounts I've paid. I've asked to speak to their complaints team and they are giving me a callback. Do I have any leg to stand on and how can I put this forward to the complaints team. Any help would be much appreciated.
Thanks in advance

Hi. Welcome to the forum. Your post begs the obvious question. You say that you have been paying but did you check that the bills were based on actual rather than estimated meter readings? If you haven't been providing the supplier with actual meter readings then you are most probably looking at a catch up bill based on a meter reading requested by the supplier. The bad news I am afraid is that the energy supplier has every right to bill you for the energy consumed.

Have you got your bills ? To really get anywhere you need to work it out yourself and see if they are correct but you are entitled to a justification of their reasons.
  • I've had my electric bills(which were estimated) but when looking through my bills I thought they were electric and gas but they were just electric and I've been paying around £75 a quater for just electric it looks like. So from my workings out I've not paid any gas because I've never had a bill or letter advising anything about it? Sorry I'm pretty un experienced with this so I may sound a bit dull thank you though

Have you noted down the meter readings when you first moved in? If so, it is a pretty simple exercise to calculate what you owe. As far as gas is concerned, the supplier does owe you an explanation as to why it has never billed you? It is worth mentioning the Back Billing Code to them. In certain circumstances, suppliers cannot bill for any energy supplied past the 12 month point; i.e., if the supplier agrees, then it would only charge you for gas supplied from today and 12 months back to December 2014. That said, they may not agree that the Code applies.

Google Back Billing Code for more information. Best of luck.
