The Policy Shop Avoid Nightmare

Recently renewed my car insurance with these as they came out the cheapest. BIG MISTAKE. They have been hounding me since for endless documents and if I dont produce them they will cancel my policy on the 24th with £50 admin charge and fee for loss of commission. Can honestly say all I have had to produce before was proof of no claims bonus which is fair enough.
I dearly wish I had stayed with Hastings Direct but these were cheaper and foolishly thought I would be better to swap. NEVER AGAIN.

What documents are they asking for?

  • Copies of driving licence, V5 cert, permission to access DVLA online and something else I can't remember.

Supply them with the documents and your sorted surely?

I had an insurer ask for a copy of my licence recently, no big deal except they said i had 14 days to provide it and sent a letter out within 3 days chasing it.
I phoned them and they said it was a mistake and they had received the copy anyway.

First time i have been asked for a copy of my licence since i was 19.

  • Problem is I keep emailing them to ask if they have received them and they are not replying. Time is ticking by. Can well do without this hassle especially with Xmas next week. Have just read some awful reviews for them online too

Dont trust emails. Phone them and ask and pop a copy in the post.

  • All the documents you have been asked for our standard documents these days for compliance reasons

DVLA access is to check convictions etc on your licence
    NCB - Self explanatory
V5 - To proof ownership to prevent fronting of an insurance policy

These documents will be asked of all customers not just you so don't feel put out. They are just making sure that no hidden surprises are found down the line if a claim occurs etc.
  • Happened to me as well. I was with Admiral but switched to Ignition as they were about £80 cheaper. To be honest, I was trying to call Admirals bluff when they said they wouldn't offer anything cheaper and I threatened to leave and did.

I'm between two addresses which wasn't a problem for Admiral but Ignition insisted my license have the same address as as the one I was primarily at. Ended up spending £80 getting a new licence.

I can't think of a compliance reason that would require these - care to expand your comment?

If it was compliance then every insurer would need them.

Changing your address on your licence is free, what was the £80 for?.
  • If your insurer is a Broker, the underwriter may request them to get specific informaion from the client. Sometimes these are random, sometimes it's because they suspect fraud. From a compliance point of view, a Broker would need to do this to satisfy the underwriter's demands. Not sure how it works for insurers that underwrite their own policies.

A lot of companies now have credit/address checking systems to weedle out people who don't actually live where they say they live. So if you've just moved in, chances are they can't pick you up at that address hence needing proof with the license address matching.
