Cheese and Chutney Hamper

Hi

Merry Christmas!

Just some advice please, I'd like to get my parents a cheese and chutney hamper.

Would it be best to make myself or is there a reasonable for around £25-£30 that may deliver for Xmas.

Thanks

  • Personally I would make one myself. That way, you can include any particular favourites and you'll also get more for your money.

I'm certainly not an expert in this area but generally you get much better value if you create the hamper yourself and you can also pick and choose what will go in. I am horrified by the prices quoted for a couple of jars of chutney in a presentation bag- daylight robbery IMO!!

I would suggest you take a trip to Aldi & Lidl's to see thair offerings. This time of year there are loads of small waxed cheese around in all the supermarkets.

You only need a large cardboard box with shredded packaging. I'm sure you will see how others do these things on the hampers thread.

Have fun! Needless to say if you do it yourself it can be a truly personalised gift as you can include old favourites as well as something new to try.

I'm making a cheese hamper for one of my family members. I was in The Works at the weekend and they had a selection of very nice wicker hampers in different sizes costing between £3 and £10 (the £3 one was about 12" square so big enough for the hamper I wanted to do). They came with some straw (but not much) for padding, the cellophane and a tartan ribbon.

I'm filling mine with a few cheese truckles which are sealed in wax (which I bought from a continental Christmas market last weekend) along with some black olive crackers (from the deli counter in Tesco's, I think), and a couple of pots of homemade chutney. I might add a couple of miniatures of port too.
  • I agree with other posters who say make your own.

A number of supermarkets have the cheese truckles for £1 in a wide variety of flavours. And Asda has their Asda Extra Special range of chutneys for £1 a jar.

I've just bought a small ceramic pot of Stilton from Lidl. Their cheese is usually good and you get a handy pot to keep;)
  • The only thing about making your own - which I would usually advocate - is that it generally needs at least a month to mature, flavours develop etc.
