Everyone needs a will.
Assuming you are an "average" type then that sounds more than most pay a solicitor for a straightforward will.

Yes his conveyancing fees were a bit higher but did a swift and top class job...I'm happy to find something cheaper for a will.0 -

do you care what happens to your estate if you die : if not then you don't need a will, if you do care then probably best that you have one.
do you know what happens to your estate if you die without a will : if not then find out : http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/manuals/ihtmanual/ihtm12111.htm
or put 'rules of intestacy' into a search engine0 -
So last year I put my name down for will aid as above. A year later, November 2016, what happens? Are they supposed to contact me? Am I on a list? Doesn't seem encouraging since I did this a year ago.0

Why would they contact you? Normally once a will is in place it will simply remain in place until it is superseded by a revised, more up to date will. Normally you would need to speak to a solicitor or will writer to effect any changes. In my experience it would not be standard practice for a will writing company to contact you yearly to check if anything has changed0

I read it that catoutthebag didn't have a will written last year but is on the list to have one done this year. If that's the case I don't know the answer to the question.
I actually called in at a local solicitor yesterday who quoted me £80 + VAT for a single will, which seems pretty reasonable so I think I'll do that rather than go though the bother of finding someone to do it free in a year's time.0
