Finally made the switch - salary?

Hi!

I finally plucked up the courage to switch my current account from my (at least) 20 year old one to a new Halifax reward account. I have gone for the 7 day switch option which I hope will go smoothly (though I do have many direct debits and so on to switch). My main question to those who have already switched is this - will Halifax contact my employer and give them my new account information for my salary to go into or should I ring my employer now and give them the new sort code & A/C number just to be sure?
I am insane and have 4 mortgages - total mortgage debt £200k. Target to zero = 10 years! (2030)

For incoming funds no they are not contacted. But on the other hand, funds incoming to your old account should be automatically transferred to your new account.

Outgoings such as Direct Debits, Standing Orders should be automatically transferred over and the payees contacted. But it did happen to me twice when I switched to Nationwide and then to TSB that although DDs were transferred over, the payees submitted their DDs again and they were duplicated on the new account. So watch out for that. When I deleted the duplicate DDs I received the regulation letter that basically meant, "You b'tard, you deleted our direct debit." so if you delete the duplicates inform the payees.

Note "should" does not mean "will". Check everything.

For clarity, a report is sent to the payee (certainly it is if the payment is via BACS Direct Credit) advising them of the correct account details to use in future. Whether the employer (or Government body/pension provider/etc) gets, or even acts on, this report is a different matter.

If you don't let the payee know yourself, you won't out if they have acted until 36 months have elapsed!

A "payee" is outgoing, not incoming. Yes, DD Payees are contacted.

Apologies, meant to say payer, as in the payment service provider making the payment for the organisation (eg employer, pension provider, DWP, etc) into your account (which the rest of my post should have made clear).

    Not disputed.
  • If I were you, I'd let everyone who pays you know anyway.
  • I switched to the Halifax in August using the 7 day switch service and they updated my details with my employer for me.
