Fraud help

Hello, my partner had some details stolen. I am unsure as to the extent of what information was obtained. But we have had money successfully taken from one of our credit cards.

Yesterday a letter arrived - signed for - with nothing in the envelope, I assume this was used to obtain my partners signature via the online service that lets the sender see the signature (Yeah, sort it out Royal Mail you idiots )

This is going to have a huge impact on our credit rating and also cause us hours of misery sorting out any more money that is taken from us.

Is there anyway we can protect ourselves somewhat?

Any advice welcomed :)

You really must be silly if you think Royal mail are to blame for a scammer using there service.
  • Hi Steve,

Thanks for the reply, but that really isn't what I was asking.

What I want to know is, can I do anything to stop more fraud occurring and protect credit ratings.

PS. I might be silly but I can spell 'their' :rotfl:

The first thing you need to do is contact the company where your money was taken from.

They will conduct an investigation and if they are satisfied this is not your fault, they will refund you. T&Cs state that if there is any negligence on your part then they can hold you liable i.e disclosing pin numbers etc

You should register yourself with CIFAS to say that your personal details have been stolen so that if there are any new credit applications made in your name, the company will be liable to check with yourself if it is you who has made the application or if it is fraudulent so you will need to enter contact numbers for them to contact you.

You can also add a password to Experian/Call Credit however not every company uses the same credit reference agency so there is no guarantee you will get a phone call asking you to confirm the password. Not all companies use CIFAS either however most banks/building societies too so it's probably your best form of protection.

*Savers Club not included in overall 2016 savings until the tin is opened and my estimates have been confirmed later in the year.

It's Stevie, and that's as maybe that you can spell but I am not the one who is blaming a courier service for a problem and admit my spelling is bad but have no issue with this and also no issue with being pulled on it either.

My point was do not blame them as they cannot determine every single item being posted via their network and even through asking customers at the point of accepting parcels and letters it will never be fool proof.

As for the above post it will help you but you also need to keep an eye open for anything else added ie:- direct debits and so forth and look at what is being applied for in your name.
