* Download all as Zip * - Desperate for Help!

Options
Hi all

I've spent 3 hours already trying to figure this out..

I am trying to e-mail a Letter & CV attachment to a company, and have just typed & prepared my e-mail, ready to fire it off. However, I've just sent my e-mail to myself as a 'test' e-mail, to see how it looks.

Now, when I open up the e-mail, underneath the attachments is the option to 'Download all as zip'. If I click on this, it opens up a window, showing my CV & Letter. However, along the left-hand side of the window are the following headings:-

Documents
Pictures
Music
(etc.)

Now, if I click on Documents, it brings up other stuff (such as my personal finance spreadsheet) - which, of course, I do not want anyone else to see.

If I send my CV & Letter as an attachment, will the company be able to view my other stuff?

If it helps, I have saved my CV & Letter on my stick drive (can't remember exactly what it's called - it's a little thing that you connect to your PC).

I'm sure my enquiry will give someone a good laugh, but I really am very naive when it comes to computers. I am tearing my hair out at the moment, so any help would be appreciated.

Many thanks

Windows opens ZIP files in Explorer. This means you see the same left-hand folders as if you's simply opened Explorer yourself (e.g. using Winkey+E).

When the recipient opens your ZIP file they'll see THEIR folders not yours.

PS - Download all as ZIP sounds like you are looking at the email through a web interface (like Gmail). If the recipient uses an email client they'll simply see your files as attachments.

If the documents aren't zip, I don't see any reason for a suggestion to download them as zip.

For normal files I have two options in gmail:
    • Open with ... (dropdown menu for most likely programs)
    • Save file
So, it looks to me like the documents had been compressed (converted to .zip) before sending. Why? Just attach normal files without converting them.

Or is it just your e-mail provider suggesting to zip them for downloading all in one go as one zip file? If so, does it not give an opportunity to download them separately?
  • As grumbler suggests - it is your email provider that is doing this. Because there are multiple attachments it is helpfully(?) offering to download them in one go as a zip.

Send your application - it will be fine.

You do need to be sure that it doesn't go as a zip because it's highly likely that a corporate system will block a zip file from being opened, and there's a good chance it'll either be removed before the email reaches the recipient or the whole email may be quarantined. Can you send it to a friend or yourself at another email address first to make sure?

I stand by my first reply in post #2 ... it's the OP's email "client" causing the confusion.
