Just a further thought - I know when Windows 10 first came out that the activation servers would have occasional off-days when they wouldn't activate very quickly.

It might be worth just waiting and retrying in a day or so, especially as the error said something about not contacting the server.

This was the earlier version of Windows 10, but to confirm I used an ISO from the Media Creation Tool and upgraded straight from Windows 8 (not 8.1) to Windows 10. I seem to remember I did this by mounting the ISO and running Setup.exe from within Windows 8, not booting from the ISO.

I decided to just go the whole hog and reinstalled W8.0 from my original OEM disc. I then upgraded via microsofts website link direct to W10 1511 which activated immediately. So thank you all for your input :T
