Investing in wine.

That's the only bit I disagree with.
Unlike gold, oil etc, good wine changes. It improves with age and (should, often does) increase in value.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but my understanding of fine wine is that it's supposed to be kept for a certain number of years, then drunk. If you keep it for too long it eventually turns to vinegar (although I understand that "too long" can be decades or centuries for certain varieties if kept properly).
What this means is that when you buy a fine wine, the taste of it in (say) 8 years time is "priced in". The winemaker knows perfectly well that the wine will taste much better in 8 years and charges you for what it will taste like then, not what it tastes like now.
Of course people do make money from buying young wines and selling them at a profit years later, but this isn't really investment return, this is payment for providing storage services.0 -
In getting cold called .
End of discussion. If you are being cold called you are being duped.
Wine is a specialist investment - for people who have actively got into it, researched it, made their decisions and know what they're doing.
If anybody cold calls you about ANYTHING about which you are not a keen/interested/knowledgeable semi-expert, then hang up.
No discussion. Just cut them off. Do NOT be tempted to listen to anybody's weasel words.0 -

That Action Fraud web-page does provide a link to a site which gives advice on what to out look for if anyone does have an interest in wine as an investment.Living for tomorrow might mean that you survive the day after.
It is always different this time. The only thing that is the same is the outcome.
Portfolios are like personalities - one that is balanced is usually preferable.

Just ask yourself
-if this is a good investment why would a stranger cold call me to sell it to me?

Like others, I would not recommend it unless you know your wines. And never on the basis of a cold call! We have been investing with Berry Brothers for a couple of years now, OH knows his wines and we have not made any profit yet. Some of the wine is for keeping for years to come, some is meant for drinking. However, we always took the view that we'll try it for fun more than anything and if we don't make any profit at least we can drown our sorrows with a good bottle or two
So far all the wine we had for drinking has been excellent :rotfl:0 -
That's the only bit I disagree with.
Unlike gold, oil etc, good wine changes. It improves with age and (should, often does) increase in value. This is fairly easy to predict with some knowledge and some good trusted advice. The trouble comes with the external factors I alluded to -- the economy, nature, etc.
Thats only true up to a point. If wine gets too old it does go off. The alcohol strength determines how long it can be kept; the stronger it is the longer it is OK to keep.0 -

Thanks guys.
The response is not unexpected. Yeh not sure where these guys have got my number from! Given I know very little about this market its not something I would really consider, however I read a couple of historical Times/Telegraph articles that seems to confirm consistent levels of price inflation.
Thanks in particular Brasso for your first hand experience. ( not sure where the other threads are as a search for 'wine' in the titles did not show any such)
i normally cut off this type of call before they get the first sentence out, but must have been feeling kind on Monday. They are supposed to be sending me some info and I now expect a call for a Senior consultant, so I will look forward to that call :-) but you can be sure I will not be investing.0
