Directors' and Officers' liability insurance

Hello,
I am a director of my own Limited company and have been researching D&O Insurance.
Some content suggests that both legal (and associated costs) plus compensation/fines are covered by the insurer. Other content contradicts this and suggests that compensation/fines are NOT covered.
Is there a general rule of thumb on this? Any other relevant information would be most welcome.
Thank you.
