Epson printer Warranty clarification

I have had an Epson A3 all-in-one printer for very nearly a year and now the print has become smudged and despite following all their instructions to clean the print heads, etc, the fault will not clear.

According to the Epson website, my (very large and heavy) printer is covered by a one year warranty "On site (field service)". The person I contacted said this means they will swap the printer for a refurbished one and I can either take it to Currys (where I bought it from online) and get it swapped free of charge or they will replace it by courier if I pay £10.

Now, I'm pretty sure that on site field service means they should send out an engineer, with no charge. But Epson insists that I have to pay £10 (taking the printer anywhere is not an option, it's too heavy).

In addition, according to the website my warranty began on 16th December 2014, but I didn't even order the printer until 19th December and didn't receive it until 24th December. Surely the warranty shouldn't start until the delivery date?

I'd welcome any suggestions to help resolve this. I'm so fed up, ideally I'd like a refund, but I don't want a lot of aggravation so will settle for a repair - as long as the fault doesn't reappear!

Your not entitled to a refund, the remedy is their choice not yours and they choose repair.

If you are going with the terms of the warranty then you need to follow their procedure, paying £10 would resolve this.

You can reject the warranty and try the SOGA route but that means you will need to prove the printer is faulty. This will need an independent expert to confirm an inherent fault, not easy to do and will cost you around 80-100 quid. You would be able to claim this back if successful. To try your rights with the SOGA route you need to contact the retailer, good luck with that.

For me it's a no brainer, a tenner gets you an exchange and if you decide to go the hard way you still need to take the printer back to Currys, which was a suggestion they made anyway.
