Sony 2015 Bravia models with Android TV

Hi all,
I wondered if anyone can sense check the likelihood of receiving a refund for a Sony Bravia 2015 TV that I purchased from a Sony Centre store at the end of August.

I've read up on the consumer rights information on MSE and the general consensus I get is that my rights to a refund are reduced due to leaving it longer than 30 days; however, I do believe I have good reason for leaving it as long as I did.

The reason for wanting a refund is the product is not as described as it's missing features that were stated in Sony's press launch material and on the Sony Centre website. One example is USB HDD recording.

Obviously this was apparent as soon as I set the TV up and this feature did not work, but upon researching why it wasn't working, I came across a press release on Sony's support website stating that USB HDD recording would be enabled imminently with a new firmware release coming in summer 2015.

Since then, the same page has been updated twice with the firmware release being pushed back until some time before December 24th 2015 originally and only last week, being pushed even further back to 31st March 2016.

To cut a long story short, I've waited longer than 30 days on the basis of Sony telling me the feature was imminent through a software update. The cynical side of me believes Sony have done this on purpose as to coerce consumers to wait more than 30 days.

What do people think my chances are? I have screen grabs of the HDD recording still being advertised on the Sony Centre website.

It's simply likely to be incompetency or inefficiency on the part of Sony. It isn't a conspiracy or coercion attempt.
I'd say you have limited chances, but a polite letter to the retailer saying you would like to return the item due to advertised features not being available and the date being pushed back for them to be available won't hurt.
  • I think most of the smart TVs have software issues that may or may not get fixed at some point. I have a new Pansonic running Firefox and it does everything traditional TV does very well, but some of the apps are buggy. A software update seems to have fixed the buffering issue with iPlayer.

I am now trialling Nexflix which looks great but optical audio out does not work with that app so I can't feed the sound through my hi fi system. I've also found out that some apps like Amazon Prime and Netflix for some strange reason need to be fed via some Panasonic server and if that is down, as it was a few days ago, you get a network error when you try to launch either of them.
