Faulty good purchased two weeks ago- refund?

My son purchased a pair of snow boots for snowboarding on 28/11/15 from a store. He used them last night at the dome and noticed that the threads were coming apart on the boot. He phoned the store about getting the boots replaced and was told that they would need to be returned to the manufacture for them to make a decision whether they were faulty or damaged by my son. Is this right or could he insist on a refund as he is due to travel in a couple of weeks time with these boots, the reason for the purchase in the first place. Thanks

Thank you to all that post & contribute, I think you are wonderful, I could not achieve without your help :)

They have the right to inspect them. Whilst some don't bother there are manufacturers that insist on inspection before issuing a credit to the retailer. The retailer is just following their guidelines which is in their right to do.
