Firstly, do you have good mobile phone signals where you live? Smart meters use this system. Ovo wanted to give us a SM and I agreed but it won't work so I have to read it myself anyway. As mentioned above interoperability problems are a pain and in fact I think that the whole SM thing has been rushed through without proper planning, at considerable cost and with little advantage to the consumer.
  • After going on the MSE E.on collective tariff we started getting calls from them about having a smart meter and didn't see any problem but the install was an eye-opener.
The guy who came to fit it didn't give the impression that he really knew what he was doing, it took him over 3 hours and he left a right mess, the job looked crappy as well, previously there had been no wires in sight as there had been a black box thing along the bottom covering them but this had gone and everything lined up previously but the meter is in an odd position now, I made a few enquiries and an acquaintance who works for NEDL, our local distribution company, said the job should not have taken more than half an hour and the guy should have replaced the cover on the wires.
Tried contacting E.on about this but they aren't too interested.
The display thing for the smart meter is a pile of junk as well, it does not give as much info as our old energy monitor, which no longer works as the guy cleared off with the bit that sends info from the meter.

Thanks for posting your experience. It sounds like they are giving idiots half a days training and letting them loose to fit meters when they don't really know what they are doing.

You should definitely make an official complaint about this fitter and at least demand that you are supplied with a replacement energy monitor and or compensation. They should not have taken your property.

The rollout of smart meters really is farcical.
