Over charged by garage. What are my rights?

Hi all.

Took my car in to get a wheel sorted. Prior to the repair, I sent a picture of the damage and was given a price. Plus exactly what I wanted doing, no less no more. However, after the repair I see they've bumped up the price on the invoice more than stated on the message. They did not make all the costs clear beforehand that were 'extras' such as changing the wheel. Not a huge amount of money, but I feel a bit peeved that I was deceived. I paid with my debit card.

What are my rights here. Can the bank refund the difference??
Thanks.

Why did you pay if the invoice was "wrong"?

If you paid without protest at the time your bank will need a lot of persuading the amount you authorised is incorrect.

Your best avenue is a complaint to the garage and take it from their reply?

(How much are you talking about?)

What you wanted done and what needed to be done may well be two different things.
Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill
  • £20 over. Yes I should have protested at the time I couldn't honestly remember if they included VAT in the email quote or not. So I just thought it was a bit sneaky and accepted it. Fast forward to today, and I checked the original email and they SAID £50 PLUS VAT.

When I inquired via email I got an apology and was told that changing the wheel was an additional cost as well. Plus VAT not included... Arrrgh. They've contradicted themselves.

If changing the wheel was obviously required to do the job then it should have been included.
If it might have-might have not needed changing then they should have phoned you.
Not much you can do. Argue with them over the £20 if you want but you have no real recourse since you've already paid. I suppose you could let them know you'll be taking your business elsewhere
Changing the world, one sarcastic comment at a time.

Without this information no one can advise you correctly.

People used to email a garage i worked in with pictures saying "how much to change tyre" etc. They got a quote to change the tyre with balancing the wheel and fitting a new valve. Then they would turn up with the wheel still attached to the car so there was an additional charge for removing then re-fitting the wheel to the vehicle.

I apologise for this sounding nasty but you just sound like you are being a pain and want something for nothing. And your quote of 3.10 add VAT in both accounts the way you have worded it.

Wanting something for nothing. Erm. No. I just wanted the total price for exactly and only what I wanted doing beforehand. But yeah, maybe you're right and I'm a pain for being like that. My bad.

That's a ridiculous way of quoting!

I'm guessing if somebody emailed for a quote to change a cluch you quote half and hour then the other 6 hours when they bring the car in because they didn't say they wanted the box taking out and you assumed they'd carry the engine in for ya.

Why do you consider it ridiculous?
Whenever I've had a flat tyre and changed the wheel myself, I have always taken the punctured one into a garage to get the tyre repaired or replaced, and I'm sure that this is exactly what most people do so if I was to ask for a quote for the work, I wouldn't expect to be given a figure that allowed for removing and refitting the wheel to a car.
