Cancelling Return Request

I am currently selling selling some car logo cuff links on Ebay and I sent a buyer the wrong logo. I realised this as soon as they were posted and sent the buyer an apologetic message and promised to dispatch the correct ones the next day 1st class, which I duly did. Meanwhile, the buyer got the wrong item and they probably had not read my message and opened a Return Request. He did get the right items the very next day and he message me so, I messaged him that I did not want the wrong item sent back, have it as a gift, but asked him to cancel the Return Request. However, I am getting messages from Ebay to refund the money, or send him a return label and refund when I receive the item. If the request is not dealt with by 18 December 2015, Ebay will either send the chap a label costing £2.99 or give a straight refund. I have since message the buyer again to cancel the request, but he has not responded. I have read online that cancelling request is a complicated process, but does anyone know how this can be done by the buyer? By the way the item cost £5.99 with free postage.
Many thanks

I did exactly the same as you but refused to send a replacement for this exact reason. The buyer can now claim a refund even though they have a replacement. It is refund or else. Personally. I'd just tell the buyer to let the refund time out and hope they do not escalate it.0

Like mrcol1000 says this is tricky as you can't close the request without opting for one of the options. Unfortunately no longer support good buyer/seller relationships and by doing the right thing you might also lose the money.
Personally I would be tempted to phone the buyer.
For my last INR the buyer wanted a replacement which normally I would have sent, but as they had opened a case I couldn't risk it so refunded instead .I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the eBay, Auctions, Car Boot & Jumble Sales, Boost Your Income, Praise, Vents & Warnings, Overseas Holidays & Travel Planning , UK Holidays, Days Out & Entertainments boards. Accept the return and mark it that you've sent the buyer a label. It will then time out eventually as the buyer won't return the item.0

Thanks for all your suggestions. I have taken theonlywayisup's advice and I think it will all work out in the end.0
