I'm getting normal pay on 26th and BH pay which is about a third more on 28th.

We have a notice at work listing what days are paid the premium etc

It's my first Christmas for the eight Christmases working for my employer that I have not work CE and worked BD.

I wrote a post about this earlier this year that we were unable to book it off as its a Saturday as rumours were we were going to open normal hours. That what annoyed me as who is going to shop at 7pm on 26/12? Fortunately, we are open 9-5.

Still unhappy with being paid normal rate. For those colleagues that are contracted to work 4-5 hours on 26th, could add those hours to other days they work or if only work 2 or 3 days, to work a day earlier in week. As I work 8 hours, there was no option.

We are expected to work at least one of these dates - 24, 26 and 31 Dec and 1 Jan. Next year, I booked 26/12 and 1/1

That's true but it doesn't mean it's morally and ethically right. I am guessing most of these jobs are low-skilled, poorly paid ones. Correct me if I'm wrong. There is a surplus of labour for such jobs, therefore employers can do what they want pretty much.

I feel especially sorry for retail workers, having to start at 6am Boxing Day for the sales - for no extra pay! Working New Years Day - for no extra money.

http://www.usdaw.org.uk/Help-Advice/Workers-Rights/Festive-Rights explains it quite well. I imagine the CEOs of the big chains are taking Christmas off....

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-3077506/Next-bullied-staff-Sundays-Retailer-forced-employees-accepting-pay-cut-working-refused-redundant.html Okay, okay it's the Daily Mail but still!

I remember one shop opening on Boxing Day at THREE O'CLOCK AM!

Retailers don't help their employees with cost of taxis. I say the vast majority of shop workers that work in city centres travel by public transport as either don't drive, cannot afford a car or parking is impossible and/or expensive. Public transport doesn't run on 26/12 and at 2-4am, so it's asking a relative to run them in and back or a taxi, which some local authorities it is TREBLE rates before 7am on BD and others it's double. So some workers are paying for MORE in taxi fares than they earn.

No one should be forced to do this

Hi I work in a supermarket and they are saying that boxing day is boxing day and the Monday is just a normal working day, boxing day itself is the bank holiday, can they do this? Thanks

What does your contract specifically say about bank holidays?

Saturday (Boxing Day) isn't a bank holiday. Monday is.

If a bank holiday is on a weekend, a ‘substitute’ weekday becomes a bank holiday, normally the following Monday.

Our contract stated enhanced pay rates for the 25th and 26th, rather than saying Xmas and Boxing Day. We thought this was fairer, as those were the days shiftworkers least wanted to work.
