Confusion over Tax Voucher (Equalisation)

I made two purchases into an accumulation fund in March 2014,1-3 weeks before the ex date 01/04. The distribution date was (listed as) 31/05/2014.

So my understanding is that for the tax year 2014-2015 I have received a (notional) dividend. Therefore I was expecting a tax voucher detailing this amount and an amount of equalisation.

However II seem adamant that I am not due one...

You would not receive information on the dividends earned prior to the Ex-date. This is because there are no dividends earned prior to an ex date. You would only receive a dividend if you hold the stock on the due date which is the beginning of the dividend period.

Between the date of purchase and ex date there are no dividends applicable and this is why this information would not be on a CTV.

And

In order to receive the dividend you need to hold the stock on your account on the ex date to receive the dividend on the pay date.

A dividend amount would not be generated for the time between you making the investment and the ex date.

Which has thrown me frankly. What am I missing here?

FWIW it's Vanguard LS, the 2015 annual report outlines two share groups. Group 1 (purchases prior to 01/04/2014) who get a full distribution and Group 2 (01/04/2014-31/03/2015) who receive some distribution and some equalisation. I presume the structure was the same for the year ending 2014 but I can't locate the report

Cheers

  • were your purchases settled by the end of march 2014? i'm not entirely whether it's settlement date or trade date or whatever that counts for funds.

but if it all happened in march 2014, it does sound like your units should be in 'group 2', which would usually give you a mixture of distribution and equalization.

Yep, statement shows settlement dates of 17th and 27th.

Thanks, i'll see if I can confirm that they are Group 2 with Vanguard then go back to iii. Seems quite a few people have issues over the CTVs based on the iii thread
