Insuring a second car temporarily

I have recently renewed my car insurance and paid the annual premium in full. I now have mechanical problems with my car and am unable to drive it until I manage to sort out the problem.
I have been able to borrow a friends car for the time being and am confused as to whether I need to insure the car in question as my fully comprehensive insurance covers me to drive other cars 3rd party only which should include this one. However my friend owns a handful of cars and has motor traders insurance.
The cheap car ( the vehicle is only 850cc fiat and quite a few years old ) that I have borrowed shows up as taxed and mot'd but is not listed on the insurance database. My friend tells me this is often the case with vehicles that are insured under traders policies.
Do I need to get temporary car insurance for this vehicle alongside my own policy ? I probably only need the use of the car for a few weeks, but does my own Insurance cover me to drive the vehicle under these circumstances ? Any help would be greatly appreciated
Thanks
Dave

You need to check your policy/certificate wording to see if there is a requirement for the car you drive under DOC cover to be insured in its own right.0

I'd double check the policy as usually the car has to be insured elsewhere, not sure if motor trader policies count. You don't wanna be caught short as the fine will be more than the policy , and especially at this time of year you are likely to come across plenty of road side checks.0 -
Would a simpler solution be to change the insurance over to the car that I am borrowing whilst my car is off road. is it easy to sorn a vehicle and then unsorn a vehicle a month or so later.
Will my insurance company simply apply the admin fee £20 + quid and then I will be fully covered for the other car. As its only 850cc and hardly worth much is it likely that there will be no increase in premium ?0 -
You may hit a problem as you will be wanting to insure a car you neither own nor are the RK of.
Look at a "temporary insurance" policy.0 -

If you are with a decent insurer they may be able to add it to your policy temporarily for a few quid. It certainly won't hurt to ask.0
