Paint Shop Pro. Some Advice Please

Options
My grand-daughter will shortly begin working with Paint Shop Pro 5 or 6 at her school. Her teacher has advised that she gets the same version for home so that she can take work home and continue doing it without any conflict.
I am loathe to buy such an old version but was thinking of version 8 as it is still fairly basic but suitable for their XP operating system at home. (It would seem that versions 5 and 6 were for windows 95/98)
Would she be able to continue any work she did at school on version 5/6, using a version 8 at home?
I'm Glad to be here... At my age I'm glad to be anywhere!!

I uses psp regularly and I was told by many people (on psp user forums) that 8 wasnt a good version, so I skipped straight through to 9.

Not sure about continuing work at school that she started on a new version but I'll check for you now - still got an older version installed on this pc! ;)

I've just tried and cant open psp9 files in psp7. May not be the case with earlier ones though as psp9 is very different in the way it saves files. Dont know what to suggest really, I'll have a check on the jasc/corel website and see if I can find any useful info for you. ;)

okay, I just found this -
    http://en.allexperts.com/q/Paint-Shop-Pro-1038/PSP-7-8-compatibility.htm

So I came back, I opened a file in psp9, hit 'save as' and in the dialogue box that comes up there is the 'Options' button which allowed me to choose to save as psp5/6/7/8 compatable. (You learn something every day!!)

could be a slight problem as she may lose some of the features of the file in an earlier version but it should warn her of this when she saves; it will be trial and error for her but the later versions of psp are so much improved - really cant say about PSP8 as I skipped it. PSP9 is wonderful!

I'm still on PSP 7.0 and very happy with it. Try Ebay as suggested.

Thank you all very much for your trouble. The chances are that she will begin her work at school on the older version and then continue at home. If PSP 9 can save to the earlier versions then I have no doubt that it can work on the files created by the earlier version at school. Think I'll look round for a 2nd hand copy of the old ones and if not then will buy PSP 9 for her. Thanks again

yes PSP9 will work with any files from older PSP versions. For most software its the compatability of newer edition files/old edition software that can cause a problem.

Worth keeping an eye on Amazon too - their sellers do good deals sometimes - click on the '# available new and used links' on the product details page.

  • ukno what i'd do. since why PSP9 is like £90 i'd wait see how much she does actually need it. if at all. then consider from there.

what do children do if they dont have a PC in the home? so surely the work that needs to be done can be done within school hours.

unless they are gonna supply every child with a pc...just saves u £90

just see how much she needs it. might be worth the wait.

You're right of course but only grand-daughter and I'm putty in her hands. lol
I think I can buy something around the £10 - £15 mark to do the business

Corel Paint Shop Pro X is available from Amazon for £29.98
Might not be the cheapest price but seems reasonable.
