Blogging and advertising revenue

Hi guys and gals.
This isn't my main job, but i have websites, mostly spam, and put ads on them. In the last 4 years i have made about £20,000 from people clicking on the ads.
Not a bad sum of money, but not great and could be considerably better, if i spent more time working on it.
The trouble i have is the sites with the ads on are sailing close to the wind and a bit spammy.
My best months earning from this was about £900 quid.
I quite like how you plant seeds and then just sit back and make money.
Trouble i am having is that i am a bit crap at writing stuff, not terribly interested in anything either.
I am tempted to pick a niche, maybe even fashion stuff for women because girls seem to love reading other girls blogs. I also think a news type site would be good where you regurgitate news websites articles and put a bit of spin on the titles and add more keyword density. I did this with one article about a woman shouting racist abuse on the bus and got 500 or a 1000 hits in one day. I don't think the ad clicking was that high, though.
I just can't think. I have the skills, maybe lack the determination. I could also probably do with a cheap writer.
Nothing is easy is it?
Can anyone share ways they make money from blogging and ad revenue? Maybe give me some inspiration.
I also get tempted to set a car insurance site up, targeting cities, though, not national, and put ads on them. They have a higher cpc and the competition looks low.
I think i lack motivation, but i have been arranging imagery on a website all day so i think i am feeling more motivated than usual.

You've written a lot Op, but you haven't really said anything.
Anyone who has worked hard to build up a blog isn't going to give away their secrets so easily. But with all the money you're making you don't need any help from others, do you.Liverpool is one of the wonders of Britain,
What it may grow to in time, I know not what.

Err.... 20k in 4 years isn't exactly a lot from ad revenue lol.
It's not like they are mega secrets is it haha. Most niches are competitive.0 -
It's not bad when you consider many sites just use ads to make enough to pay for running costs. Perhaps you can tell us YOUR secrets to making that much from advertising as you say your sites are just 'spam', does that mean sites full of links?Err.... 20k in 4 years isn't exactly a lot from ad revenue lol.

Sites that allegedly offer stuff for free get visited a lot, now we all know hosting pirate stuff, etc. is illegal, however, there's a lot of sites out there that pop up when people do a google search for "nulled", "torrents", etc. yet there's nothing like that on them, they just give you a description of the product and then link to the original developer's website (Codecanyon, Themeforest, Adobe, etc.). :ABig corporations take advantage of the unwary, it's time we learned how to deal with them:dance::dance::dance:Any comments are based on personal experience and interest in consumer matters, they do not constitute advice.0 -
Yes perhaps you share your secrets first as most people I know won't even make £200 a year from their blogs

Hi, sorry for not getting back to you sooner.
When i say spam, i mean low quality in the sense that the content i have written isn't exactly riveting and i mostly wish for the user to click on the ad so i put the ads in prominent positions. This month i have a site that targets something particular, festive related. This site has made me £500 pounds this month. Again, not great, not bad, not exciting.
What do you get up to then absolute return, i notice that you posted on the text broker thread, so presumably you are looking to get into blogging or making money online?
I am looking to expand on adsense ads and also include links to affiliate programs. I have a relatively good domain set up at the moment, and a few other sites that are mostly junk but have good standing in the search engines, so i can use them to piggy back on for my main site which i wish to put effort into making good.
I need someone who can write something worth reading at an affordable price.0 -

Does that most people include you? haha.
It depends how you look at it. I see a lot of blogs online but people are doing it the wrong way. They are using free blogs for a start, instead of registering a domain name and setting up a wordpress installation on some paid for hosting.
And they also structure their site wrong / don't make it as SEO friendly as it could be. Changes that are simple and easy to implement, but the average blogger isn't teccy enough to comprehend - particularly the stay at home mom types. I see some relatively great blogs written by young girls interested in fashion, stay at home moms etc, but they're missing out on the exposure.
It's also what you blog about. If you blog about something boring, or something cheap, the return from ads won't be good. When you blog about the more expensive things in life, your traffic can be higher quality because they are usually looking for what you are writing about, whether it is insurance for their car, a loan, fast money, a hotel, etc.
Writing about how you can make a cake for 20 pence is interesting but probably not going to make you much money - unless your name is Jamie Oliver.0 -
It would be good. I've done a rather extensive WP site, not in blog format though, it's a consumer resource and no ads at the moment since I wanted to use it to get other work. What do you get up to then absolute return, i notice that you posted on the text broker thread, so presumably you are looking to get into blogging or making money online?
About what subject?I need someone who can write something worth reading at an affordable price.
I only use my own domains. It depends how you look at it. I see a lot of blogs online but people are doing it the wrong way. They are using free blogs for a start, instead of registering a domain name and setting up a wordpress installation on some paid for hosting.
Not really my area, different age group. And they also structure their site wrong / don't make it as SEO friendly as it could be. Not easy to blog about expensive things if you haven't got much experience with them. It's also what you blog about. A lot of people are interested in this sort of thing though, offer saving tips and you'll get a crowd, just look at this site! :money:Writing about how you can make a cake for 20 pence is interesting but probably not going to make you much money - unless your name is Jamie Oliver.Big corporations take advantage of the unwary, it's time we learned how to deal with them:dance::dance::dance:Any comments are based on personal experience and interest in consumer matters, they do not constitute advice.0 -

Are you tracking traffic levels? Presumably you mean consumer as in very similar to mse type articles / consumer rights? If that interests you, and you can write a lot about it, i can see how it would work.About what subject?
My interest is more along the lines of bad credit finance. You seem to know a bit about that stuff looking at your past postings. There's plenty of info in existence already, but i need someone who can research and put something together worth reading so that i can promote the content and get more hits and make more money. Not really my area, different age group.
How old are you then? Not easy to blog about expensive things if you haven't got much experience with them.

I could shoe horn that sort of stuff into the site, someone whith bad credit needing a loan is also going to need advice about best practices with the money they do have coming in.
My dreams of emulating this site, though, are non existent, because it wouldn't happen.
There are sites on the web already that have tried this, some are ok attempts, but most are bad.
I would settle for modest type blog that provides relatively useful info and generates about 50k/£100k revenue a year, that would do me. And i would continue to do other work offline. Sitting around at a computer all day everyday isn't really my thing, i like to get a bit of physical activity now and then.
Why not post your site, i'm sure it wouldn't be classed as spamming.0 -
Yes, along those lines but in a slightly different vein to MSE as the emphasis is more on the legal side of things as opposed to saving tips. Are you tracking traffic levels? Presumably you mean consumer as in very similar to mse type articles / consumer rights? If that interests you, and you can write a lot about it, i can see how it would work.
Ah, yes, I do know a bit about that, although you may be looking at it from a different angle. My interest is more along the lines of bad credit finance. That's not a question that us ladies like to answer truthfully! If we did, all those companies selling anti-ageing creams would go bust!:rotfl:How old are you then?
Possibly but not necessarily. Defaults stay on file for six years, you circumstances can improve but you still have bad credit till they drop off. On the other hand, I know some people who've never defaulted on anything yet they love all those saving tips, and they subscribe to this site and watch Martin on TV. :money:I could shoe horn that sort of stuff into the site, someone whith bad credit needing a loan is also going to need advice about best practices with the money they do have coming in.
This site was established 12 years ago when there wasn't that much around. I still remember the old style forums where you read posts using a newsreader. There weren't many on UK consumer subjects, in fact most were American and the UK ones were more about local issues. My dreams of emulating this site, though, are non existent, because it wouldn't happen.

On your request: http://consumer.newbeginningsresources.co.uk/credit/ It shouldn't be a problem because it's totally non-commercial and there are no ads.Why not post your site, i'm sure it wouldn't be classed as spamming.Big corporations take advantage of the unwary, it's time we learned how to deal with them:dance::dance::dance:Any comments are based on personal experience and interest in consumer matters, they do not constitute advice.0 -
Err.... 20k in 4 years isn't exactly a lot from ad revenue lol.
I don't know how much you're making then, but I do know that there's a hell of a lot of inspiring Internet Marketers who would love to make that kind of commission.
If you think £20K is peanuts, then would you kindly explain why and what you're earnings are?...
I say well done to the op for making that amount, considering he/she has admitted to not being passionate about anything.0
