Hi Charityworker, afraid I can't offer any more advice than what has already been said about logging all incidents. I really feel for you as I have had a very similar experience when working for quite a large charity where the CEO was clearly (to me anyway) a corporate psychopath. After nearly a year of being bullied and undermined openly both at work and in public I escaped. A friend of mine is a psychiatrist and told me the re is nothing really you can do against these very manipulative personalities as their mental make-up is such that they genuinely believe everything that they do is noble and just. Her advice was to get as far away as possible as they have a tendency to destroy lives when they believe they have been wronged or criticised. So log everything and if you can get witnesses in case this escalates.

What was the programme you saw? I would be interested to watch it!

I watched a programme last night about how the corporate psychopath works and almost everything they said fitted her.
Having been the victim of one myself, who very nearly ruined my life, I recommend this book to help understand: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Empathy-Trap-Understanding-Antisocial-Personalities-ebook/dp/B00CKDE9IE

Your former colleagues are probably just pawns in her game and are also being manipulated. As sgun says, best advice is to stay clear and not play your role of victim in her game and allow her to move onto someone else.

I've looked for the programme I watched but for the life of me can't find it anywhere. It was on on Tuesday and it was the second in a series. Last week it was about psychopath criminals and this week it was about people of power.

Was it 'meet the psycopaths' by any chance?.

Security came up to me and asked if I was ok and I just said "ignore her she's an idiot".

In addition to following TBagpuss's good advice, don't brush it off next time. Tell security that you are upset by the harassment, get them to log it as an issue and keep a record of the time and place yourself - it will all add up in evidence in your favour.

They are self funding I'm afraid hence the £10,000 loss every year. All their income comes from the charity shop. I'm afraid the chairperson has thought of everything to get away with what they do.

I'm on the committee of a small charity and our trustees are personally liable for any debts.

The charity may be incorporated in which case the trustees are not held personally accountable but are more like directors etc of a company. I would guess given the personalities involved that they have thought of this. It still doesn't add up though, something very odd going on there. Most charities would have been wound up at that level of debt. I think it would be tempting to investigate further but my advice is to leave well alone and stay clear of this person. It eats you up otherwise and life is just too short.

From what I remember the charity is not in debt just working through £100k legacy at £10k a year.
  • The charity isn't incorporated. It's just a straight registered charity and the trustees are responsible for any debt. The main trustee is liable to lose her house when the charity goes under. I expressed my concern about this several times in the 7 years that I worked there and just got told off in front of all the volunteers and customers in the charity shop for being negative.
