LibreOffice. It's interchangeable, I use it all the time, you can save your docs in Excel/Word format and there's no difference. I don't know anyone who uses Word or Excel for home use, no point.

You can use the on-line versions

Possibly, the only way to be absolutely certain is to open it with Word and see.

If it were me and something as important as a job application I'd do it again in Word using the free on-line version.

I'm no Microsoft evangelist, I use a Mac and Linux but there are times when MS Office is the only way to go.

  • There is also OpenOffice, which I have always used on my PCs/laptops at home. I assume it will be similar to LibreOffice.

I use Libre Office and have it set to default to saving in ms word and excel formats. Just go into settings to make the adjustment.

In fact there is another post just below yours regarding ms office which will answer your question and describe how to change settings.

  • If you are sending the document to anyone else regardless of what software you use to create it is is best to send it as a PDF document.

In LibraOffice or OpenOffice, you do this using the Export function which you can find below the File tag.

If the job application specifically asks for a Word document, save you file as a .doc document, providing you are using a classic font like Times New Roman you should have no issues.

Unless you work with complex macros, Libre Office will do 99% of the job that MS Office will, and for free-just make sure you save as .docx, not to the Libre default format.
Companies that specify job apps in Word are going to be fairly clueless as far as IT goes. Otherwise I would always submit as a PDF.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

They specify job apps as Word to enable them to remove certain bits and adding their own comments before passing on to the potential employer.
