Halifax down? any thoughts?

When I try to access internet banking after successfully entering my security information, I receive the following message:
"We’re sorry, but you don't have any accounts that can be accessed through Online Banking."
I called them but they say something like there's not enough information on their system to be able to check my account (i.e they cannot see my accounts either) and that I should visit a branch. Obviously quite inconvenient as I work regular hours.
I have not received any letters from them and my account was working fine 2 weeks ago.
It's not the first time i've had to visit a branch and i'm honestly fed up with Halifax. I'm thinking I should write a letter asking for my account to be closed and a cheque posted to me.
Has anyone experienced anything similar?

No but these things tend to happen to all institutions so I'm not sure it is a specific problem with Halifax.
Got locked out of Santander yesterday, entered incorrect details whilst logging on a single time. Rang them up and have to wait a week to get new details through post, probably longer with xmas post.
Interestingly also opened a bos vantage account. Logged into Halifax a few minutes later and that was showing immediately.0 -
That is Halifax for you, one of the WORST banks.

It works fine for me! I have had my accounts for 5 years and not had problems..... But I avoid banking online if at all possible.
Sounds to me like a stiff letter / e-mail required stating the inconvenience etc and expecting a small donation from them as a sweetener! Always worth a try since they are messing you about.Being polite and pleasant doesn't cost anything!

Looking at the timestamp of the OP - 05:33 on a Sunday morning - could be their systems were down for maintenance? Have you tried it again later? It's been working fine for me about an hour ago.0

What makes you say this?
The guy on the phone did hint it seems like it's been closed. But I believe banks are required to provide reasonable notice to their customers (at least 30 days) if they intend to close an account. I have not received notice.
Do you know what the procedure will be in the branch? I'll bring my passport and a list of recent transactions. Is it easy to get my money back?0 -

It still doesn't work.0 -
Hmh. GingerFurball's suggestion might well be correct then. It's extreme if a bank closes an account without notice, but they are allowed to do so in certain circumstances.
