  • Oh I'd forgotten about Freeport, we went there and got some Ralph Lauren stuff and the Nine West shoe store was very nice. Loads of discount shops

The science museum in Boston is good, I particularly liked the lightning show. Any of the walking tours in conjunction with a trolly pass gets you round most of the major sights and be sure to visit Fenway Park (home to Red Sox).

If you are anywhere near Providence, the 'Firewalk' is worth a look, it can be quite spectacular if it is not too windy.

About 135 miles allow 3 hours to drive or take the coach from Boston airport about $20 single.
  • I agree with all the above about North Conway - don't forget to look at the outlet for LLBean here as there are some great bargains - the Muddy Moose is definately not to be missed also. Their main store is in Freeport (with the big boot outside so you can't miss it) and also worth a look.
I also like Rockport (Ma) and Kennebunkport (Me) - 2 nice little places to mooch around for a half day. You can also get very fresh lobster from lobster shacks here.
  • OOOOHHHH - Came back yesterday and was hoping that someone was looking for advice whilst it is all still fresh in my mind!!

    Where to start???

Boston - definitely do a Duck Tour - absolutely fab and a good way to get your bearings in a confusing city so try to get it in early.
Cheers pub - wouldn't bother going inside - you will only be disappointed (I knew this but I went in anyway and guess what!!!

Salem - completely disagree with some of the other posters, we stayed 2 nights there (the Hawthorn is nice, although we didn't stay there). They do make a lot of the witch thing (even the police have a little witch emblem) but it is also a historic fishing and privateering port. Take time for a trip on the 'Fame' schooner, well worth it. For a wonderful dinner with the best service try the Grapevine which is opposite the Salem Waterfront hotel (where we stayed) - superb.

Freeport is good - you will probably only need 2 or 3 hours - but avoid Kittery (also an outlet place which is too spread out and is pretty much the same shops as Freeport anyway).

Chatham - will take you about an hour to look around if you go in all the shops and there aren't that many places to eat. It's pretty enough and worth a walk down to see the ocean but there are much better places in Cape Cod IMO. Hyannis is a fun, bustling town with lots to do. Check out what's on at the Melody Tent if you fancy going to a gig whilst you are over there (fantastic small venue with a great atmosphere and a revolving stage).

Whale watching is an absolute must we went from Portsmouth, just south of Boston and saw loads of whales who wanted to entertain us!

White Mountains and Green Mountains is a bit vague for me to comment but both areas are beautiful. Try a drive up Mount Washington if you can!

Wish I could go back now!!
