Charity shops are business's. All profits go to charity but they still have to pay rent, utilities, some staff costs. I am therefore not surprised that less than 50% goes to charity.

People who shop in charity shops don't really shop there to help the charity. They just want cheap goods and justify it by saying "Its for charity". The reality is of course its just cheap!
No some people make a choice to spend their money in charity shops. I hardly buy any stuff except food from new shops because a) I think it's greener and more ethical and b) I would rather give my money to charities than big business. You can't assume everyone's motivation is the same.
  • BoP now interrupts for the hard of understanding.

If commercial organisation runs itself as a charity expend £200,000 on a bric a brac stall, but collects £200,001 in doing so, it makes £1 to its governing charity.

If in spending the £200,000, it employs three or four workers, it puts money back into the community.

    Simple?
