My DD has got into college, a full time course, which is actually 3 days per week, and is also doing another course for another full day, the amount of stuff she needs to buy from the college is around £500, could we get some help to pay for this as theres other bits she also needs not from college, they gave her 2 A4 pages of stuff to get, some cheap stuff, that can be got from anywere, some stuff that will cost more, all this to be paid for next week, she only got confirmation that she got onto the course a week or 2 ago.
Thanks
Thanks

local education authority, bursary, grants/loans...think you need to make a few phone calls to local authorities, if you need the stuff by next week...don't hang around...try phoning the college as well...you won't be the first...or the last probably to ask them the question.....
I suppose if there isn't any help forthcoming...all she can really do is borrow the money....friends....loans....bank?....after all, thats what most post grads will have to do....could she get a weekend job in a salon while she's training?I'm now a retired teacher... hooray ...:j
Those who can do, those who can't, come to me for lessons:cool:0 -
The support available will depend upon how old she is.
If under 19, then she should apply for an EMA, and your household income will be used for any financial assessment made.
If over 19, the support varies. She may be entitled to the Adult Learning Grant, but this depends on the level of the course and her previous qualifications.
In both cases she'd be able to apply for the college's learner support fund. This is a discretionary fund and each college sets its own criteria. For example, if a student had an income of under £15,050, we would pay 80% of kit and uniform costs. Some pay more, some pay less. We do not help anyone with an income of more than £20,817. If a student is over 19 but lives at home, we would include their parents' income unless they could show they supported themselves.
So best thing to do is to contact the college student services and see what help is available.0 -
Thanks, i'll have to ring the college, getting her the stuff isnt the problem, as i will put it on my card for her, it has to be paid by next week, the college order it for her, i wouldnt dream of making her pay all that herself, she has just left school, only 16, she has had a saturday job since the age of 14, but that is her money, but we are a family with 5 kids, hubby works part time due to stepson having problems, so just applied for EMA, as 06/07 earnings were just over £9000, just would be nice to be able to get a little help for the initial outlay.
Thankyou for the info

Students who get EMA are expected to use up to £100 for kit & equipment. The college will have funds to help with costs over this (LSF). Most colleges will also operate a policy where they can refund you if you've already paid out.0
