Slightly O/T, but what's the difference between .doc and .docx

The simple answer is that .DOCX files are often as small as half the size of the same .DOC files. The old .DOC files were a complete mish-mash of historical formatting horrors, and MS started from scratch using a compressed form of XML.
In practice, you could use either, but if you want to save some bytes, try the .DOCX variant.
